In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Dr. Charlotte Markey, professor of psychology and body image and eating-related behavior researcher. Dr. Markey describes her journey into researching body image and eating-related behaviors, as well as defines for listeners what body image is. We discuss the primary social influences on body image, including social media, and how these influences can with harm or promote positive body image. Dr. Markey discusses healthcare providers' understanding of weight and body image and ways in which healthcare providers may be unintentionally contributing to disordered eating behaviors and poor body image. Further, we discussed her books The Body Image Book for Girls: Love Yourself and Grow Up Fearless and Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys and her upcoming book Adultish: The Body Image Book for Life. At the end of the episode, Dr. Markey also provides any listener struggling with body image words of encouragement and advice.
