Residual Whispers

Episode 19 - Aokigahara

Listen Later

Located on the Northwestern side of Mount Fuji on the island of Honshu in Japan sits 30 square kilometers (12 miles) of temperate broadleaf forest. The forest is hauntingly beautiful and a hotspot for tourists and locals alike, boasting some of the most gorgeous views of Mount Fuji and featuring several volcanic caves which can only be reached after a pleasant hike through the trees. Unfortunately, the beauty of Aokigahara is overshadowed by its reputation as one of the most prevalent suicide locations in the world, second only to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Not only is the sea of trees surrounded in legend and Japanese mythology, but it is believed that the spirits of the hundreds who have taken their own lives there remained trapped in the dense and unforgiving woodland.

Trigger Warning: this entire podcast episode and the accompanying blog post deal with the heavy subject matter of suicide. Please proceed with caution. If you need someone to talk to, call the suicide hotline at 988. Someone is willing to listen and help. You are loved.
