Employment Matters

Episode 202: The Narcissistic Executive

Listen Later

Transformational leaders challenge the status quo, provide a vision of a promising future, and  inspire their followers to join in the pursuit of a better world. But many of these leaders also fit the American Psychiatric Association classification for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. They are grandiose, entitled, self-confident, risk seeking, manipulative, and hostile. In this webinar to podcast, Professor Chatman reviews what we know about why we are often susceptible to (mis)perceiving narcissists as transformational leaders and how we can avoid this bias. She will also discuss what we know about how narcissistic leaders affect organizations, including creating unreasonable risk, and cultures that are lower in integrity and collaboration, and how these negative consequences can be mitigated.  Professor Chatman's writings can be found here.
