Episode 21 - "Grey's Table", Disorienting Dilemmas, Disruptive Discipleship

Listen Later

Larry "Grey" Mitchell is a truly fascinating individual. Hear more of his incredible story and the legacy that he hopes to leave behind. Spend 10 minutes with Larry and you will hear his vision for "setting a Big Table for God" so that anyone and everyone can sit and have a deep and meaningful conversation. Another 10 minutes may reveal his methods for walking with people through disorienting dilemmas while gently, and lovingly, challenging their comforts and preconceived notions of what life is all about.

  • Grey mentions the scene from A Knight's Tale, starring Heath Ledger that helps form a hope that there is different way, a "Kindom Way".
  • Larry uses these lines quite often. "Put love where love is not" is a take on St. John of the Cross and his famous quote, "Where there is no love, put love, and you will draw love out."
  • "Kick at the darkness until the light bleeds through" is a take on "You gotta kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight" from the song, Lover in a Dangerous Time by Bruce Cockburn. This version from the days following 9/11 is a pretty moving performance.
  • This paper is one of many on the idea of Disorienting Dilemmas and their effects on learning, performance, etc. The article gives a balanced view on their effect.
  • And this paper felt like a good companion as we progressed through the conversation of instrumental and transformative learning.
  • Dead Poets' Society may be one of Larry's favorite movies according to how many times he's mentioned it. It's worth a watch.
  • "Love ought to show itself in deeds more than words" is one of the central ideas behind St. Ignatius of Loyola's 3 part vision in answering, "what's life all about"?
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs ended up losing a heartbreaking Game 7 to the Boston Bruins. I felt Larry's pain as I watched it all go down.
  • If you would like to read a book that actually uses the term, Disruptive Discipleship, it's been written by a gentleman named Sam Van Eman.
