1. WHY IS BEING HYDRATED SO IMPORTANT?  There are three stages to water regulation of the body in the different phases of life: Fetus, Growing and Aging phases. Drinking enough water each day is crucial for many reasons: to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. The brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery: 31%. Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood.

2. WHAT CAN CAUSE DEHYDRATION?  Diarrhea, Vomiting , Sweat, Diabetes: frequent urination and excessive thirst are among the early symptoms. Burns. Your skin is a protective barrier for the body and is responsible for regulating fluid loss. Burned skin cannot prevent fluid from leaving the body. Inability or failure to drink water.

3. HOW CAN YOU TELL YOU ARE DEHYDRATED AND WHAT COULD HAPPEN?  Early signs: you are thirsty, reduced urine and darkening of the urine (smelly). Progressing dehydration signs: dry mouth, lightheadedness, muscle cramps, and heart palpitations. If you don't get enough water, hard stools and constipation could be common side effects, along with abdominal pain and cramps. Dull skin. Dehydration shows up on your face in the form of dry, ashy skin that seems less radiant, plump and elastic. Fatigue.

4. WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO STAY HYDRATED? Drink ½ your body weight in water in ounces daily (i.e. 150 pounds = 75 ounces). Increase during the summer months or if you exercise frequently. Don’t wait to drink water until you are thirsty. Carry a reusable water bottle, then you will always have one. Infuse your water with fruits and vegetables. Replenish frequently, after using the restroom or exercising. Track it using a hydration app. Pay attention to your urine color. If darker than normal (slight yellow tint), HYDRATE!
