The gospel does not begin with human potential, but with human ruin.
In Episode 2 of Living Theology, we confront one of the most misunderstood doctrines in Christian theology: total depravity. Not that humanity is as evil as possible—but that sin has touched every part of who we are. Mind, will, desires, and affections are all corrupted by the Fall. Scripture does not describe us as spiritually confused, but spiritually dead.
When depravity is softened, grace is cheapened. When sin is redefined, the cross is diminished. Salvation only makes sense when we understand that we contribute nothing but the sin that made it necessary.
Until we grasp the depth of our corruption, we will never grasp the height of God’s mercy.
