Many churches lovingly separate children and youth from congregational worship, assuming this helps faith formation. But what if, over time, it teaches something unintended—that worship isn’t really for them, that church is a programme to age out of, not a body to belong to?
My latest paper explores how age-segregated worship shapes belonging, accountability, and long-term faith, drawing on psychology, church history (especially the drift of Sunday School), and current research on youth disengagement. The argument is simple but unsettling: formation happens by participation, and when children are formed outside the gathered body, disconnection should not surprise us.
