Celebrating October as Dyslexia Awareness Month. This week you will hear a different story, every alternate day from individuals with SLD.
Episode 3: In conversation with Nishtha: (English and Hindi)
Nishtha is a wanderer. Her primary language is art. She believes in living in harmony with nature. She has explored a few courses like masters in clinical psychology, diploma in dance movement therapy, experiential education, music visual art, psychodrama.
Hear her experiences with reading and writing difficulties along with living with ADHD.
She discusses what has worked for her, how fonts make a difference while reading, being blessed with supportive friends who understand and help her. Also being resilient despite failures and learning to cope with them.
Tips for students: Chill, you are not coming from a lack. There is nothing wrong with you. Recognize your triggers and trust your instincts. Operating from abundance rather than operating from lack. Figuring out your strengths and what works for you. Ask for help. Speak up!
Tips for Parents/teachers: Don’t force them to conform to society norms and expectations. Society needs all types of beings. Let them explore and be the person they are and communicate in the form they are most comfortable with. People are more compassionate and empathetic when there are differences they understand. Explore what works for them. Don't pass your fears to them. Support them in their struggles. If you can’t do anything just sit and say that I am here for you and I love you. Be a strong support system for them.
Things that work for her: Learning things through movement, visual arts, origami, things that are of high interest help learning to stick longer.
Acknowledge the label and move beyond it. It is necessary to understand the difficulty but it is not meant to be restrictive.
