You could say Nolan Smith was born for basketball. The son of Derek Smith, Nolan grew up around the NBA, and the game was a family thing. As a young player he was a phenom coming up in the DMV. A turning point moment upon losing his father, Nolan found a deeper purpose in his play. Landing at Duke, he was not only a standout player for Coach K, but a leader and a champion.

With an NBA career that was cut short, Nolan found a natural calling as a coach. Instead of Durham, he’s now in Memphis, part of a program where he’s a key figure in building a winning culture and developing well rounded players. As Penny knew Nolan’s story, he saw the promise in him not only as a coach, but as motivator and as a man.
