Episode 331: East Meets West, Part 2

More East Meets West and more interesting recorded jazz. With a few details about each selection.

For many of these artists I struggle with the pronunciation of their names. So to make them more accessible to you (and to me), I'm going to write down a few of the players as I give you the 'set list' of recordings I'm using for this episode.

  1. The Persian Jazz Fusion Ensemble. Does anybody know the name of this tune? Musicians in the group are: Sini Partovi- percussionist and leader; Arash Eyvazi-bass guitar; Taha Mazaherei-gutar; Amirhossein Tavasoli-oud

  2. The Veil--Jussi Reijonen. from album called Kolme Toista (translates as Three Seconds). With Reijonen on fretless guitar, Jason Palmer-trumpet, Utar Artun-piano, Kyle Miles-bass, Bulut Gulen- trombone, Naseem Alatrash- cello, Keita Ogawa- percussion,Vancil Cooper-drums.

  3. Tourist Point of View-Duke Ellington. From The Far East Suite, written by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Features Paul Gonsalves on tenor sax. I also hear some of that wild trumpet playing of William "Cat" Anderson. Also Mercer Ellington – trumpet, flugelhorn, Herbie Jones – trumpet, flugelhorn, Cootie Williams – trumpet, Lawrence Brown – trombone, Buster Cooper – trombone, Chuck Connors – bass trombone Johnny Hodges – alto saxophone, Russell Procope – alto saxophone, clarinet, Jimmy Hamilton – tenor saxophone, clarinet, Harry Carney – baritone saxophone, John Lamb – double bass, Rufus Jones – drums.

  4. Bandish by George Crotty (Canadian Cellist) , from Heart Music (2025). The lydian modPe is referred to as Raag Yaman in Northern Indian classical music. With John Murchison-bass and Jeremy Smith-percussion.

  5. Paint it Black by Gabor Szabo, from Jazz Raga. With Bob Bushnell-guitar, Johnny Gregg-bass, Bernard Purdie-drums, and Szabo himsel on sitar and overdubbed guitar.

  6. The Three Faces of Balal from Eastern Sounds by Yusef Lateef. With Lateef on flute, Barry Harris-piano, Ernie Farrow-double bass, and LEs Humphries-drums.

  7. Crossing The River of Grace by Jihye Lee, from an album called Infinite Connections. From 2025. Features David Smith on trumpet and fluegelhorn.

  8. We Live in Brooklyn Baby (Roy Ayers) by Chien Chien Lu. From The Path. With the funk bass guitar of Richie Goods, Shedrick Mitechll on pano, Quinton Zoto-guitar.

  9. Precipice--Rajna Swaminathan. From her 2023 album, Apertures. With Utsav Lal-piano, Miles Okazaki-guitar, Stephan Crumb-bass, Adam O'Farrill-trumpet, Anna Webber-tenor sax, and vocal assistance from Ganavya.

  10. Is Not All One by Tony Scott, from 1964's Music for Zen Meditation. With Sinici Yuize-koto, and Hazan Yamamoto-shakuhachi.
