The 1980s were the best decade for larger than life action heroes. There were so many characters and moments to come out of the decade. We talk about the sudden passing of one of the greatest. Chuck Norris became a meme after the birth of the internet, but he never stopped being a bad ass. Plus, it seems like they are finally going through with a Conan sequel with possibly the biggest action star of them all. We throw around what direction it may decide to go.
Another trademark of the 1980s was pumping out content. The straight to video market was booming leading to some awesome childhood memories. This also led to a number of names becoming familiar through the sheer volume of their work.
You just don’t see that anymore which is one of the things that made The Serpent’s Skin so interesting to us. At only 21 years old, this is director Alice Maio Mackay’s sixth film. An impressive feat that is a throwback to old school DIY exploitation guerilla filmmaking.
Unfortunately, this also leads to some glaring flaws. Cringey dialogue and poor pacing take away from its grounded storytelling and Buffy-esque plot. The Serpent’s Skin is filled with promise, and there is a lot to like. It just feels like it needs more seasoning.
