Nick: Hello everyone, thanks for tuning into 5 Minutes with AOPA-China. I'm Nick. Today, we have this special episode fora good friend, Yu Dongguan. He ranks second in our 5 PM aviation Quiz group. Hello,Mr. Yu. Can you give us a brief introduction of yourself?
Yu: Hi guys, I am Yu, an aviation fancoming from the quiz group.
Nick: We all know that you are super fan ofaviation. I’m curious when did these all start?
Yu:When I was a child, my family told me a lot of stories that related Chinese AirForce, for my grandpa was a major officer of an Institute of Chinese Air Force.So you know, it influences me a lot and built up an appetite for aviation frommy childhood.
Nick: Oh man. You are from an aviationfamily. What was your dream when you were a child?
Yu: Pilot, no doubt!
Nick: Haha, Awesome. What have you done forit?
Yu:Well, during the years of growing up and college studying time, I tried my bestto gain aeronautical knowledge as much as I can, buying and reading a lot ofbooks and magazines. Thanks to the Internet, I could access to Pilot’sHandbooks, aircraft handbooks and weather reports. Also I followed advisorycircular from FAA and CAAC as well.
Nick: The materials you talked are actuallydifficult for me, I may fall asleep reading them. How do you memorize all thosecontents? You must be retentive.
Yu: I would love to share my experience.First review frequently, review what you have learned. Second, when it comes tonew stuff please do connect it to the old knowledge which you already knew.Finally, as an old school guy, I prefer writing blog to keep track of what Ihave learned. You can find my blog on the internet, if you are interested.
Nick: Aside from reading and writing, whatother ways do you use to acquire aviation information?
Yu: Oh yes, I also listen to Podcasts whichposted by professional aviators, and liveATC which I could listen to live airtraffic control dialogue all over the world.
Nick: Wow, that’s exciting. What crazythings have you done as an aviation fan?
Yu:Maybeyou can’t believe it, I once called to the airport to ask them the real-timeweather, (you guess) cause I want to know the airplane which I take would bedelayed or not. I wasn't a pilot for my flight but acting as one. LOL.
Nick: Have you got your pilot license?
Yu:Not yet, but it’s on the top of my agenda, by the way, recently I have beenreviewing the private pilot textbooks so you can follow the progress via myblog.
Nick: I will check the link. EAA airventurethis July in coming. We will go, will you be there?
Yu:Definitely, I would love to! As far as I know EAA AirVenture is the biggestparty for aviation funs, pilots and business guys all over the world. So I willnot be absent.
