In this week’s episode, I discuss the importance of becoming comfortable in love and dating with uncertainty. We will all at some point in time or another in our dating and relationships be in a place where we don’t know what we don’t know. It can be downright scary to be in that “gap” but it’s important to learn to self soothe and manage our emotions when we find ourselves there. As I always tell all of my clients, “Life and love is risk! I believe that it is worth the risk to have BIG love”!
Many of us tell ourselves “stories” or “scripts” that are oftentimes untrue just to give ourselves that certainty we crave. Then once we do this, we go on an emotional roller coaster ride and later when we find out that it wasn’t real, it can be hard to come back from those strong feelings. Do yourself a favor, and learn how to sit in that “gap” of uncertainty and find healthy ways to manage your anxiety around not knowing. One healthy script you can run is “this is not about me”! Or how about this one, “I am lovable and worthy of BIG love”! Fill your head with self-affirming stories about how amazing you are or just divert your attention all together on to some other topic of interest in your life.
Becoming comfortable with uncertainty is a skill that you can master with patience and practice. Remember to always assume good intent towards your partner until proven otherwise. This will keep your heart OPEN TO LOVE. Use the skill of appropriate vulnerability to connect with your partner and to get your need for certainty met in a healthy way.
