Forgiveness is an act of God. We can never know the exact moment when our sins are forgiven, because God is omnipotent – He acts as He wills and when He wills. However, we know that God does forgive sins, even in the Old Testament, He affirmed that with the prophet Jeremiah (…their sin I will remember no more [Jer 31:34]). In Hebrews, this same text is brought to expression (cf. Heb 8:12). The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross affects the forgiveness of sins, however, forgiveness can only reach a person if the person:
• believes in Jesus Christ,
• is aware that he or she is sinning,
• confesses those sins before Christ, and
• repents for those sins.
For the believers to be assured that their sins are forgiven, there must be, as Jesus showed, a proclamation that sins have been forgiven. That is what takes place through the absolution.
Because we have the assurance that our sins have been forgiven, we can worthily go to Holy Communion and receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

El perdón es un acto de Dios. Nunca podemos saber el momento exacto en el que nuestros pecados son perdonados, ya que Dios es omnipotente –Él actúa según Su voluntad y cuando es Su voluntad. Sin embargo, sabemos que Dios sí perdona los pecados, incluso en el Antiguo Testamento, Él lo afirmó con el profeta Jeremías «[…] no me acordaré más de su pecado» (Jer 31:34). En Hebreos, se expresa este mismo texto (véase Heb 8:12). El sacrificio de Jesús en la cruz, tiene efecto en el perdón de los pecados, sin embargo, el perdón sólo puede alcanzar a una persona si ella:
• Cree en Jesucristo.
• Es consciente de que él o ella está pecando.
• Confiesa dichos pecados ante Cristo.
• Se arrepiente por esos pecados.
Para los que los creyentes tengan la certeza de que sus pecados han sido perdonados, debe haber, así como Jesús lo mostró, un anuncio del perdón de los pecados. Eso es lo que sucede mediante la absolución.
Debido a que ahora nuestros pecados han sido perdonados, podemos ir dignamente a la Santa Cena y recibir el cuerpo y la sangre de Jesucristo.
