Blog Version of the Podcast where we discuss sobriety.
Coach Andi Petty is a holistic nutrition coach who specializes in helping her clients work on their relationship with alcohol. Andi and I found each other on Instagram, and we have very aligned journeys. Her content is so helpful for anyone who is struggling with their relationship with alcohol and other substances, which is why I wanted to interview her!
Do you need to be sober to have a good relationship with alcohol?
Andi and I are both in agreement on this... no you do not. But the main think you need to be doing some self inquiry about is WHY you drink.
Does drinking genuinely enhance your experiences? Or are you (like I was) using it to check out from your feelings and struggles. The WHY is a very important part of embarking on a journey with your alcohol relationship.
Does sobriety/sober curiosity mean you're an alcoholic?
Absolutely not! I think alcohol is a problem for far more people than we think, but because it is so widely accepted in society talking about your personal issues can be very stigmatized.
I think it's healing and helpful to let go of all labels and just remind yourself you're cultivating awareness around a complicated subject.
Are you going to lose friends when you sober up?
If a lot of your social life revolves around alcohol (going out for drinks, brunch, etc)... probably. I know I did, and Andi did too. But know that for every friend your lose, another more aligned friend will come along.
Also know that it takes time, and it can be a painful process. But if you're feeling called towards sobriety there's a bright new life on the other side of it.
What is "sober curiosity"?
"Unlike sobriety, which is often a lifestyle chosen as a result of alcoholism or alcohol use disorder, sober curiosity is often defined as having the option to choose, to question, or to change your drinking habits for health-focused reasons (mental and/or physical). The sober curious movement has encouraged individuals to recognize the often-unhealthy habits that are associated with alcohol." Source - VeryWellMind.com
I feel that this is a very healthy practice because you don't berate yourself whenever you "fall off the wagon" and go haywire. You just continue to practice self discovery and awareness.
