Before entering politics, he was an intelligence officer in the <a href='https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_National_Guard'>Army National Guard</a>, achieving the rank of <a href='https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_(United_States_O-3)'>captain</a>.
