Madison Hammond, a professional soccer player for the OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League describes her decision to go pro and her journey to becoming the first indigenous and African American player in the league. Madison strives to represent her people, family, and culture and is devoted to paving a path for women athletes who might follow in her footsteps. She shares some steps that should be taken towards dismantling systemic racism and racial structures. Her passion for increasing soccer accessibility and decreasing the pay-to-play barrier is truly inspiring. She discusses the courage it takes to enter a space where you may not see others like yourself: “If you're not seeing yourself in a certain space, be the person. Be the person that enters the space and don't be afraid of it. Instead, just embrace it because somebody might be coming after you.”
