Alex Ubatuba (@ubatubaglass) is a glass artist living in Denver, Colorado. I visited him at his studio, Satellite 6 in Evergreen, CO and sat down to chat about his story with the art of glassblowing- from starting in the early 2000s in the conservative midwest, to carving out his own artistic lane in Colorado. We also get in to the process of glassblowing itself as well as his particular process for creating the beautiful and bizarre “Living Light” glass sculptures. Listening to Alex, I got a clear picture of just how much the glassblowing game has changed in the last twenty years. Spoiler alert- it’s changed a lot, from the legalization of cannabis in many states to the new and creative ways smokable pieces have changed, heady glassblowing has moved from the margins to being a celebrated form of artistry.
