Episode 6 - Democracy on Edge: Indonesia Policing Experience

After discussing about the human rights condition in various countries, it's time to look closer to our own country, Indonesia. Following two nationwide civil demonstrations in September 2019 concerning Reformasi Dikorupsi and October 2020 about the recent passing of the controversial Omnibus Law, police brutality has been constantly growing rampant, especially in the last two years in Indonesia. Multiple instances of violence had been simply swept under the rug and this stood in contrast to the proper duty of a police, which includes using force only within the accepted boundary and to be held accountable for their misbehaviors. The speakers of this episode of Demos' Delights - Alfredo Putrawidjoyo, Caesar Leonardo, and Raihan Murtadho - will then discuss about Indonesia’s current police violence predicament through personal experiences and interesting discussion on the history of police violence in Indonesia, how policing should be conducted in a democratic manner, and the concept of civil supremacy.
