Beyond the Market

Episode 65 - Why I stopped reading finance books

Listen Later

In this episode of Beyond the Market, I talk about why I’ve stopped reading finance books.

For years, almost everything I read was non-fiction, investing books, business books, self-help books and autobiographies. All of which are books types of books that I enjoy and some of those books have shaped the way I think about money, investing, compounding and long-term wealth building.

But after reading finance books for well over a decade, I started to notice the same patterns repeating:

Think long term.

Control your emotions.

Don’t panic.

Don’t overtrade.

Let compounding work.

Avoid doing stupid things.

All valuable lessons. But at some point, reading another investing book stops adding to your investing, just ends up being an ego boost or worse procrastination.

I talk about some of the patterns that I see in investing books and how some of them are not worth the time to read let alone the paper they are printed on. Some of the books that have influenced me, including The Psychology of Money, The Joys of Compounding and Richer, Wiser, Happier.

I also explain why I now read more fiction which has helped me understanding people, behaviour and emotions more and made me a better speaker, writer and thinker.
