Listen Later

Vishwa Adapawar is a grade 11 student in humanities and has her own clothing brand called Human&co. You can follow her on Facebook and Instagram @co._humans

In spite of putting in the hard work and studying, she was struggling in school and her marks were getting deducted. This led to getting an assessment and change of school so she could get the necessary concessions. The shift from ICSE to CBSE was a big change.

The learning difficulties have been there ever since she remembers learning! It helps to have proactive parents who noticed the difficulties and got the right help early on.

Label was not important. In remediation also the focus was on this is what I know, this is what I need to work on and this is what I am very good at.

4 things that have helped her cope:

  1. Research and reading the reports
  2. Looking at the facts and reasoning with them. LD does not mean you are dumb. LD means that you learn differently.
  3. Having a good support system - friends, parents, counselors, special educators, therapists. Ask more questions and more clarity you get.
  4. Speak to your school counsellor regularly.
  5. She has many strengths and as all humans they evolve and change with her. She considers being different as her strength. It is her super power. She is proud of who she is today.

Tips for students: Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others who are trying to help you and not be rude. Taking help doesn’t mean you are weak. It gives you a better chance of knowing who you are. You are not alone. You are unique. You perceive things differently from others and that is amazing! Ask questions as it gives clarity. Talk about your difficulties. Communicate in a manner that suits you, talk, draw, dance or sing. In a world where you can be anyone, I hope you choose to be you and accept the entirety of you.

Tips for parents: Be patient, show your love and be very careful about the words you use.

Tips for teachers: Give a heads up before asking a question. Give processing time. Believe in your students. Regular follow up if they have understood or not.

Take care of your mental health and feel free to ask for help. Find your tribe. You are not alone. Be uniquely you!
