It's 2021 and anime is at its most accessible, and dare we say even mainstream. The anime industry, however, has always been very successful. It's not unheard of for the biggest franchises to be looked at as a way to make even more money – enter live action remakes. Over the years, both Japanese and Western studios have recognized the potential of adapting anime into live action films. The results have been mixed – ranging from faithful adaptations (Stream Rurouni Kenshin on Netlflix!) to downright disrespectful (Don't Stream Death Note on Netflix!). With it being so much more mainstream, anime franchises continue to evolve. But the question is, is there space for live action remakes?
Listen as Leandro Ds, Vito Alip, Jai Aquino, and Danmig Agcaoili sit down and tackle anime as it is today, crap on whitewashed adaptations and figuring out why these don't work at all, attempt to deconstruct great adaptations, and answer the age-old question – how do we make this work?
