Are we honestly waiting for the Lord?

Waiting for the return of Jesus Christ is a fundamental part of our faith. The function of the apostolate is to prepare for Jesus Christ’s coming (Catechism Q&A 442).

• The Lord explained that it is not possible to determine the moment of His return. He also spoke about the events that will precede His coming. Throughout the centuries, “the signs” have existed, so we cannot think of them as indicators of His imminent return. We believe that Christ will come again because He promised to. And, the Holy Spirit keeps that promise alive in us.

• Our motivation to wait for Christ is not to escape destruction, or because we are afraid of what will happen. We want to be with Christ because we love Him, and when we have the love of Christ, we want everyone to come and have fellowship with Him.

• The return of the Lord is above our human limitations. When God intervenes with humans, it is supernatural. His return will also be a supernatural event, and we should not be afraid of it; we look forward to it with joy.

• At His return, He will decide who was serious about His coming and prepared for it. The prospect of this judgement makes us aware of our need to prepare seriously for this, but it should not worry us.

• In our faith, we understand from Scripture that the apostles are to prepare a group to be with Christ, and we want to be part of that group. The ultimate goal of God is to allow all human beings access to eternal life.

• In order to keep the promise of Christ’s return alive, we should grow in our love for God and we should create in our congregations a prefiguration of what the kingdom will be like.

¿De verdad estamos esperando al Señor?

Esperar el retorno de Jesucristo es una parte fundamental de nuestra fe. La función del apostolado es preparar para la venida de Jesucristo (Catecismo P&R 442).

• El Señor explicó que no es posible determinar el momento de Su retorno. También habló sobre los eventos que precederán a Su venida. A lo largo de los siglos, «las señales» han existido, por lo que no podemos pensar en ellas como indicadores de Su inminente retorno. Creemos que Cristo vendrá de nuevo porque lo prometió. Y, el Espíritu Santo mantiene viva esa promesa en nosotros.

• Nuestra motivación para esperar a Cristo no es escapar de la destrucción, o porque tenemos miedo de lo que sucederá. Queremos estar con Cristo porque lo amamos, y cuando tenemos el amor de Cristo, queremos que todos vengan y tengan comunión con Él.

• El retorno del Señor sobrepasa nuestras limitaciones humanas. Cuando Dios interviene con los humanos, es algo sobrenatural. Su retorno también será un evento sobrenatural, y no debemos temerlo; lo esperamos con gozo.

• A Su regreso, Él decidirá quién tomó en serio Su venida y se preparó para ello. El prospecto de Su juicio nos hace tomar conciencia de la necesidad de prepararnos seriamente para este acontecimiento, pero no debería preocuparnos.

• En nuestra fe, entendemos de las Escrituras que los apóstoles deben preparar un grupo para estar con Cristo, y queremos ser parte de ese grupo. La meta final de Dios es permitir a todos los seres humanos acceder a la vida eterna.

• Para mantener viva la promesa del retorno de Cristo, debemos crecer en nuestro amor por Dios y debemos crear en nuestras congregaciones una prefiguración de cómo será el reino.
