Listen Later

Abhir is a curious learner, enjoys ciphers, enjoys programming and has a fascination with rubix cubes. He is 18 years old and currently studying pure sciences in 12th grade. He considers curiosity to be his strength. He wants to do research and the topics he is interested in are quantum mechanics, organic chemistry, evolutionary biology and genetics, psychology and computer science.

Currently he is homeschooled. In his first school the environment was not friendly towards children with different needs. He was good orally but had difficulty in reading and writing since grade 1. He moved into an inclusive school. It was helpful. The earlier difficulties don’t bother him as much anymore. He still struggles with handwriting but can read and write more naturally now. He doesn’t need the examination support anymore.

Tips for students who don’t have LD: Those you don’t, treat your friends as normal people. There is nothing wrong with them, Don’t make fun of them for their difficulties. Don’t be too mean or too polite.

Tips for students with LD: sincerely ask for help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help in spite of being turned down. Find something that genuinely interests you. You might feel you are not great at anything but you will soon find something you will be great at and what is your passion. KEep looking!

Tips for Parents: Don’t force them to do things they are not good at. Actually mean that you are proud of them and believe in them.Support them in your journey.

Tips for teachers: Try not to de-motivate any student. Please answer the basic questions the students ask. Be understanding and supportive. You will be surprised that once the basics are clear they may ask questions that may make you think! Help them bridge the gap.

You are not defined by what others think about you. His parents were extremely supportive in his journey. They have been his biggest advocate in school and fought for what he needed. Now he has learnt to advocate for himself.

He still struggles with reading paragraphs in textbooks and needs to read them a couple of times before understanding them. Take help and think creatively on how to deal with the difficulty. It affects you in daily life and not just studying. Like taking time to form thoughts and taking a while to get his point across. Your problems will evolve with you and you keep going. Finding something that interests you helps in tackling various obstacles. HAving LD is nothing to be ashamed about. It is just one of the things you struggle with while someone else might have something else they struggle with.

He is blessed to have approachable teachers who he can ask any questions to. His teachers answer his questions and when they don’t know, they tell him they don’t know and they will explore the answers together. They are good role models.
