In today's episode, I am talking with Jessica Black, Equestrian Adventuress and blogger who lived abroad for 16 years in different countries before returning to her native country, the USA. Abroad, she not only rode horses wherever she went, but went into horse racing, became a jockey and horse trainer in Spain and pursued her passion after moving to Latin America together with her husband. We talk about life as an expat, how horses help you, in finding friends and adjusting to different countries and societies and how it is like to return back to your home country after having lived abroad for almost two decades.

Why do you ride bareback? Is it so you can really feel your horse move or do you do it because you are too lazy to put the saddle on? That is the question we are asking in the podcast. Bareback horse riding came first. Long before the invention of the saddle, man was riding his horses bareback. Truth be known, when it comes to horse and rider, a saddle is not a necessity, but merely a handy tool of convenience. Bareback horse riding is arguable, the fastest way to develop your skill as a rider. Many riders use their saddle and their reins as a crutch. Humans tend to be rather lazy creatures. We won't learn anything unless we have to, and that goes for balance as well. It's only natural for a rider to take advantage of the stirrups and the saddle horn that sits so conveniently at their disposal.

Today I am talking about my personal experience, learning how to carriage drive, fulfilling one of my long-standing equestrian dreams! I will tell you why I wanted to learn how to drive and how I went about to do it. And then of course I will let you know how it feels not to sit in the saddle and holding reins, but to sit in a buggy, holding lines. Exchanging my saddle for a harness was definitely a great experience but also a bit of an adventure into unknown territory.

In today's podcast episode I am talking basics. Every horse owner and rider know his or her tack, be it saddles, bridles, breastplates or martingales. Traditionally they all are made from leather but a couple of years ago, a new material made its appearance: Biothane. Its an artificial material but it has greatly changed the world of horse riding with more durable and colourful tack. Today we discuss the pros and cons of both leather and biothane and what you need to know before buying it.
