Do you know how to tell how old your horse is? For some horse owners, the registration or passport will show when your horse was born. Not all of us will have access to these documents. In today's EQA # 249 we discuss some ways to tell the age of a horse. Starting with their teeth, the Galvayne's groove is a great dental feature that appears around the age of 10. From there is moved down the tooth until it is completely disappeared by age 30. We also learn about average life spans and those breeds that have an extra-long life expectancy.

The saddle is an essential piece of equipment for all equestrians. They come in all shapes, sizes, designs, and even colors. They provide comfort while out riding, help maintain position and balance for both the horse and rider. The saddle was an invention that helped distribute the weight more evenly over the horse's back making it more comfortable for both the horse and rider. In EQA # 242 join Heather as she walks about 11 different styles and types of saddles. From English general-purpose or all-purpose to the roping and ranch western saddles she covers them all.

Saddle pads for trail riders make sure that the ride is comfortable for you and your horse. They don't make an ill-fitting saddle any better, but they can help in reducing friction between the saddle and the horse's hair and absorb and distribute any pressure from the weight of saddle and rider. The choice of different styles, materials and designs is overwhelming, so today Heather and Ute talk about the pros & cons of each and about their personal preferences.
