Justthen the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight in whichthe Lion was, went up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the Kingof the Beasts. “Was I not right?” said the little Mouse.

There was once a young ShepherdBoy who tended his sheep at the foot of a mountain near a dark forest. It wasrather lonely for him all day, so he thought upon a plan by which he could geta little company and some excitement. He rushed down towards the villagecalling out “Wolf, Wolf,” and the villagers came out to meet him, and some ofthem stopped with him for a considerable time. This pleased the boy so muchthat a few days afterwards he tried the same trick, and again the villagerscame to his help.

But shortly after this a Wolfactually did come out from the forest, and began to worry the sheep, and theboy of course cried out “Wolf, Wolf,” still louder than before. But this timethe villagers, who had been fooled twice before, thought the boy was againdeceiving them, and nobody stirred to come to his help. So the Wolf made a goodmeal off the boy’s flock, and when the boy complained, the wise man of thevillage said:

“A liar will not be believed, even when he speaks the truth.”

The Crow lifted up her head andbegan to caw her best, but the moment she opened her mouth the piece of cheesefell to the ground, only to be snapped up by Master Fox. “That will do,” saidhe. “That was all I wanted. In exchange for your cheese I will give you a pieceof advice for the future:

“Do not trust flatterers.”

The Ant and the Grasshopper

In a field one summer’s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil a head of wheat he was taking to the nest.
“Why not come and chat with me,” said the Grasshopper, “instead of toiling and moiling in that way?”
“I am helping to lay up food for the winter,” said the Ant, “and recommend you to do the same.”
“Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper; we have got plenty of food at present.” But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself cold and very hungry, while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew:
It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.

The Hare and the Tortoise

The Hare was onceboasting of his speed before the other animals. “I have never yet been beaten,”said he, “when I put forth my full speed. I challenge any one here to race withme.”

The Tortoise saidquietly, “I accept your challenge.”

“That is a goodjoke,” said the Hare; “I could dance around you all the way.”

“Keep yourboasting till you’ve beaten,” answered the Tortoise. “Shall we race?”

So a course wasfixed and a start was made. The Hare darted almost out of sight at once, butsoon stopped and, believing that the Tortoise could never catch him, lay downby the wayside to have a nap. The Tortoise never for a moment stopped, but wenton with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course.

When the Hareawoke from his nap, he saw the Tortoise just near the winning-post. The Hareran as fast as he could, but it was too late. He saw the Tortoise had reachedthe goal. Then said the Tortoise:

“Slow and steadywins the race.”

But the little Rabbit sat quite still for a moment and never moved. Forwhen he saw all the wild rabbits dancing around him he suddenly rememberedabout his hind legs, and he didn’t want them to see that he was made all in one piece. He did notknow that when the Fairy kissed him that last time she had changed himaltogether. And he might have sat there for a long time, too shy to move, ifjust then something hadn’t tickled his nose, and beforehe thought what he was doing he lifted his hind toe to scratch it.

And he found that he actually had hind legs! Instead of dingy velveteen hehad brown fur, soft and shiny, his ears twitched by themselves, and hiswhiskers were so long that they brushed the grass. He gave one leap and the joyof using those hind legs was so great that he went springing about the turf onthem, jumping sideways and whirling around as the others did, and he grew soexcited that when at last he did / stɒp/ to look for the Fairy she had gone.

He was a Real Rabbit at last, at home with the other rabbits.

“I’ve brought you a newplayfellow,” the Fairy said. “You must be very kind to him and teach him all heneeds to know in Rabbit-land, for he is going to live with you for ever andever!”

And she kissed the little Rabbitagain and put him down on the grass.

“Run and play, little Rabbit!”she said.
