You didn't fail because you lack discipline. You failed because you never asked why.

When you miss a guideline, the default move is to put yourself on trial — you're lazy, you don't really want this, you knew you'd quit. That's not a diagnosis. That's a shame spiral, and shame spirals don't produce fixes. Today we're replacing the trial with a mechanic's approach: open the hood, find the broken part, replace it.

This week Erica breaks down the Five Whys — the root cause technique developed at Toyota and later folded into Six Sigma, the same methodology behind her own Green Belt from her years at Amazon. You'll learn how five whys in a row can turn "I missed my writing session" into the real, mechanical reason underneath it, why your zeros are data and not character indictments, and the difference between fixing everything at once and changing exactly one thing (only one of those actually tells you what worked).

You set the rule. You built the guideline. You found your Floor. And then you broke it.

The standard answer is shame. You tell yourself you lack discipline, that you are the kind of person who never finishes what they start, and then you say the most dangerous sentence in personal development: "I will try harder next week."

Trying harder does not fix a broken system. Diagnosing it does.

"I want to save money." "I want to get healthier." "I want to build a business."

Those are not instructions. Those are wishes. And you cannot execute a wish when you're running on three cups of coffee.

In this episode, I introduce the two tools that replace every vague goal you have ever written: the Binary Guideline and the Floor. A Binary Guideline has only two outcomes — you did it or you didn't. No gray area, no negotiation. The Floor is the minimum viable action that keeps the habit alive on your worst days.

I also tell you about the guideline I set for myself that had nothing to do with work, and the night I drove home from Atlanta at 2 AM and still showed up.
