  • Ericast 195 - Too Much Reminiscing?
Click here to listen to this week's episode!

This week we're talking about memories... and "living in memories," which isn't as crazy as it sounds given that lots of people read novels and science fiction and watch television shows and do all sorts of things that have them "living in things that didn't ever happen and never will."  It's an interesting thing to ponder.

Also, I roll in the Dweeb Thought about trying to fix YouTube audio.  Don't forget that you can get the Dweeb Thought feed piped into you brain, straight from my lips to your ears, by adding http://feeds.ericast.com/dweebthoughts to your podcatcher, or just visit www.DweebThoughts.com at your convenience.

So, any ideas to help me with "cleaning up audio in video?"  Or, what's your take on "healthy reminiscing" vs. too much "living in the past"?  Share your comments by calling 206-339-3742, a.k.a. 206-339-ERIC, or send an email to me (eric) at ericast.com.

  • Ericast 194 - The Hunger Games
Click here to listen to this week's episode!

There's a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Calvin asks his dad how they determine the weight limit for bridges; his dad replies that they drive bigger and bigger trucks over it until it breaks, then they rebuild the bridge and post the weight of the last truck.  This podcast is an example of what happens when you get really, really tired and decide to do a podcast anyway.  The proper point at which to not do a podcast is sometime before this evening's point was reached.  But, I did one anyway.  It's entertaining, in a different way.

Apologies for the audio clipping, especially in the first segment.  Too tired to back away from the mike.  Yup, that's a lame explanation.  Cope.

Tip-of-the-week: Any color named "The Ego Has Landed" is something you shouldn't use on a house.  (Don't worry; we didn't.)

Comment or question?  Call the now-infamous "Ericast Direct" line, or leave a message at 206-339-3742 (a.k.a. 206-339-ERIC) and let me know what you think.

  • Ericast 193 - I'M SO SORRY!
Click here to listen to this week's episode!

I'm a bad, bad, bad podcaster. Not just bad in the incompetent sense, but in the morally bankrupt sense, because I've left you hanging (or, as I say in the podcast, "languishing") for nearly two months and that seems to be a recurring theme in my podcasting life.

    Sorry.

A couple great calls from Jonzer and Chad this week, plus me catching you up-to-date on where August went (one word: WINDMILLS!) and what it's like to be caught in the start-of-semester rush at work.

Link-of-the-week?  The Peter Principle from Wikipedia.  Enjoy!

Got comments?  (Remember, they're obviously the life-blood of this podcast!)  Share them by calling 206-339-3742 (a.k.a. 206-339-ERIC).  You can also email them to me (eric) at ericast.com or grab me via a variety of other social media, but fair warning to you that it's really just the calls that make it into the podcast in one form or another.

  • Ericast 192 - Diversifying my Identity
Click here to listen to this week's episode!

Blame it on the heat that's been hammering the upper-midwest, or blame it on my inexcusable podcasting absence, but I'm just a smidge punchy for this episode. You'll cope.

Having been inspired by Tim Ferriss, who was written up in this post at 37signals, which was then linked to a totally different post on a site with a very different theme that, as a happily married man, I wouldn't necessarily advocate pursuing very deeply... I got back into the podcasting groove with the topic of "identity" and how it might be broader than one particular niche. (And I reference an old-old-old throwback to the first year of the Ericast, "What's My Niche?"  Wow, I'm a lot more hyper now that 7 years have elapsed...)

I plug Patrick Rhone's "Enough" podcast... and then realize that it might have been someone else entirely who told me what I was thinking of... but, regardless, Patrick has a great podcast.  Go listen to it.

By the way, should I quit at Episode 200 (which will be in... a few months?) given that I can't seem to maintain a weekly schedule and have only two listeners?  Just wondering.  Let me know.

Did I mention I was a smidge punchy?

Want to contribute?  Share a thought?  Give a quick call to 206-339-3742 (a.k.a. 206-339-ERIC) or send an email to me (eric) at ericast.com... though, really, nobody emails.  It's all about the Twitters and the Facebooks these days.  So use those, too.  Whatever works for you.

  • Ericast 191 - Mentor, or Ministry?
Click here to listen to this week's episode!

Back from Duluth and pondering how to "live at peace with everyone." Yup, it's one of those episodes... but I think you'll like it.  As promised, you can read a great review of "Encouragement; The Key to Caring" and get the idea of "goals vs. desires" -- then you can see if my "similar yet radically different" topic in this podcast resonates with you.

Call 206-339-3742 (a.k.a. 206-339-ERIC) or email me (eric) at ericast.com if you have any thoughts or additions.

  • Ericast 190 - The Emotional Semicolon
Click here to listen to this week's episode! Catching up May and a chunk of June with some miscellaneous caller-inspired thoughts, and an update on my life-in-general with a metaphor based on punctuation. That messed a few people up, but it makes sense to me.  Sorry that it's excessively long -- 35 minutes, which is something close to two episodes worth... but if you have to, listen to it two chunks.  That'll work. This episode is an example of what happens when you call 206-339-3742 (a.k.a. 206-339-ERIC) to let me know what you want to hear more about. Thank you!  Keep it up!  Or, email me (eric) at ericast.com and give some feedback.

  • Ericast 189 - Iowa Gets Motivated!
Click here to listen to this week's episode! I promised an update from my Des Moines, Iowa road trip... and here it is.  I explain why it is that I have a strange affinity for the Get Motivated seminars.  And why I married a blonde.  Really. Please, please do call 206-339-3742 (a.k.a. 206-339-ERIC) to let me know what you want to hear more about, because I could take this a whole lot of different directions.  A whole lot.  And you can help narrow them down.  Or, if you want to stick with the written word, email me (eric) at ericast.com

  • Ericast 188 - Why Do Video?
Click here to listen to this week's episode! The results are in (such as they are) and it really and truly does seem that we're stuck with that ugly link in the feed because someone at Blogger Central decided to eliminate the "link" option in the post title.  Unbelievable. Other than that, the interface seems nice.  So while this doesn't quite rise to the level of, "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"... it's still pretty annoying.  (And judging by the Googling I've done, I'm not the only podcaster who's disappointed in the change.) This week's episode is some rambling about the challenge of doing video and, in particular, the challenge of making the audio in a quick-and-dirty YouTube video any better than garbage.  Does anyone have suggestions for that (or, conversely, are there any alternative sites that handle audio-editing in video clips better than YouTube does)? Share those comments, questions, and other discussion by calling 206-339-3742 (a.k.a. 206-339-ERIC) or emailing me (eric) at ericast.com.

  • Ericast 187 - Four Random Topics
Click here to listen to this week's episode! Sorry for the extremely ugly "click here!" link above; Blogger involuntarily upgraded me to the new and "improved" interface, which is great, except that I can't find any way to make a post title be the link that I want it to be.  For the past 7 years that title would link straight to the MP3 of the Ericast episode, but we've entered a new era of the podcast: One where you have extra clicks in nonsensical places just so you can listen to what you want to listen to.  ARGH!!!  And it's not just a cosmetic thing; Feedburner needs that link right up front so it's pretty dangerous to not have it there somewhere... (Did I ever mention that I hate change when it's imposed on me?  Change on my own terms is cool.  Change driven by someone else at inopportune times is really annoying...) My plea on Twitter has so-far gone unanswered but we'll blog about it more here if anyone responds. In the meantime... you'll adjust.  You'll probably adjust better than I will. This week's episode touches on Evernote again (and thanks to Digital Dan for the "Evernote for Moms" link!) but, more importantly, it addresses the age-old "Ginger vs. Mary Anne" question in what I term "attraction analytics" in a blog post I wrote a few days back. Let me know what you think of that (or any other topic... but that one in particular). How?  Call 206-339-3742 or email me (eric) at ericast.com

  • Ericast 186 - Evernote Black Hole
I want to like Evernote. I really do. I hear good things about it. Same with Pinterest. But, for the life of me, I don't "get it" -- not for either one, which means I have issues hangin' out with all the hip and cool kids because they "get it" and I don't. Can someone explain exactly how Evernote is supposed to revolutionize my life? Maybe point me to a blog post or video or something that could act as a brain-dump and bring me up to speed? I also roll in some Dweeb Thoughts podcast clips on the topic of cheap technology (like MP3 players and ebook readers) and lecture capture. Fun stuff! Call with comments, even though it might not work quite right, to 206-339-ERIC, a.k.a. 206-339-3742, or email them to me (eric) at ericast.com and they'll get here.
