We start with the question of a street that is open to a thoroughfare in front, and to a courtyard, uninhabited space, trash heap, or body of water in the back. Is water or a shore considered a physical barrier? When we set up a beam or board to mark off a street, is the key that it is a physical barrier, or is it that creates a psychological recognition.
