Trade agreements, economic structures and political manoeuvrings have dictated the flow of resources from certain areas without the fair renumeration of funds in return. The systems that were established to exploit resources, to encourage corruption where possible, but to violently put down non-corruptible government are simply examples of the west’s handbook. We are familiar with concepts of capitalism, and this is OK because capitalism isn’t always exploitative. We are familiar with corporatism and that also doesn’t appear to be too bad as we benefit from the work of corporates. Yet what underpins these ideas of normalcy is the exploitation of someone, something or somewhere always a little further from sight of the consumer.
The next time you walk into a shop and buy something, ask yourself where it came from, who made it and are you paying a fair price? I know that there is mass poverty in developed countries too and you are not the target of these questions. Poor people have always supported other poor people. That is because we have been convinced to do so by elites who know they can make money from that sense of empathy.
A flawed system needs to be called out for what it is. A flawed government needs to be made to answer for its negligence. Flawed politicians need to be kicked out at the ballot box. Voters need to be more demanding of their elected leaders. Democracy, if you really value that ideal, only works if the people demand it. It’s that simple.
If you want change, you have to demand it.
Let’s start with getting rid of discrimination!
