Explore tales from three very different plant goddesses from three very different parts of the world.

Mbokomu is the first mother of humanity and the first gardener of earth- originating from what is now called the Congo.

Sadly due to the conquest of the Europeans, details of this story seem to be tainted.

Then Chicōmecōātl- the Mexica (Aztec) goddess of corn. Her name literally translates to seven serpent. She is a symbol of life and death- blood and rain !

And lastly we explore Kaguya-hime- a Japanese ancient epic about a moon goddess sent to earth inside a bamboo stalk and raised by a humble bamboo cutter. Her beauty was unrivaled and admired by many.

It seems that every culture has tales of female deities attached to plants. I dream that we can reconnect with our connection to nature and specifically to plants. They have desperately been trying to talk to us. They have been begging us to give them love and attention and care for them, as it is our purpose here on earth.

This collection of stories was translated by two native Palestinians

in the 80s who spent years recording and compiling local folktales.

In this episode we hear about ghouls, magical fertility pomegranates, evil stepmothers, magical cows, humans shapeshifting into gazelles, cannibalism, and so much more.

These stories are truly a treasure of our shared human culture.

It is so rare to have stories originally told in the oral tradition, translated faithfully and with cultural context in the footnotes.

THE GOLDEN PAIL

A story form the collection of Palestinian folktales, "Speak Bird, Speak Again"

This book is incredible and is worth purchasing and reading. Sadly, due to copyright infringement I was not able to read the story as it was translated, but hopefully my bastardized retelling inspires you to read the book yourself.

The translators Ibrahim Muhawi and Sharif Kanaana spent years compiling stories that were once only orally transmitted and translated them into English.

They spent much time hearing different versions from different people and telling the stories as faithfully as they could to the general consensus of the themes.

Their work is so important because sadly, as most folktales are transcribed , the original elements, the variation in details and endings, and cultural contexts are often lost in translation.

This book is a treasure trove of stories as it contains cultural context for the details and elements that are not often accompanied with such ancient stories.

Palestine has a rich and ancient culture. It is not to be forgotten.

I pray for all the people of Palestine and every human being that has been affected by violence.

May we free ourselves from our cycles of pain and violence.

Love is our most powerful tool. Let us not forget to use it.
