  • 009: Moving Towards a More Humane Food System with Josh Balk

“The vast majority of animals who are raised in cages can barely move at the end of their life. They're in constant pain and constant suffering… Make an impact in the lives of so many animals to make their lives better!”

    - Josh Balk

    Episode Description:

Billions of factory farm animals suffer beyond the imaginable degree. Genetic modification, inhumane treatments, confinement, and other cruel ways are utilized to ensure high production at the lowest cost. Because of the high demand, these animals are often killed in large numbers in a very short time. A few months after they're born, they are already on their way to the slaughter house while their meat is tender. They are forced to forget their animal instincts as they only learned how painful it is to be born. They never see the sun nor how beautiful the world is.

This is the reality of our world today. Profit comes before welfare. Animals are treated as commodities, as objects exploited by a greedy system. In this episode, we will uncover how grim this practice is for the animals, humans, and the environment.  Josh Balk, co-founder of Eat JUST, Inc., relates his undercover assignments inside farm factories and how the industry contributes to the disturbing state we are in. As a passionate advocate for animal welfare, Josh also talks about what’s currently being done to address this problem. Our goal should be to have tangible progress for the animals. Like us, they deserve to enjoy their lives.  As stewards of the earth, we hold the biggest responsibility to make this world a better place for the animals under our care. Tune in to learn how you can be a part of moving towards a more humane food system.

Josh Balk is the Vice President of Animal Welfare at the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Farm Animals Division. He has led efforts to enact animal welfare policies with many of the world’s largest companies, including Walmart, Wendy’s, Kroger, Denny’s and dozens more. These policies have helped shift the food industry’s reliance on veal crates, gestation crates, battery cages and cruel methods of raising chickens in the meat industry. He's also been a leader in creating and supporting start-up animal-friendly companies, including co-founding JUST, and guiding investment firms and high net worth individuals to invest in this space. Balk also led discussions with the largest food service companies in creating the world’s first partnerships on shifting their focus to plant-based foods. On legislative priorities, he was a leader on successful campaigns passing laws for farm animals, including in California, Massachusetts, and Maine.

Prior to coming to The HSUS, Balk worked at Compassion Over Killing (COK) where he conducted investigations into factory farms and slaughterhouses, and launched one of our nation’s first advertising campaigns on farm animals. Balk’s work has been covered by the Associated Press, Fortune, CNN, New York Times, Washington Post and dozens of other outlets. He was inducted into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame in 2015.

  • 008: Creating a Future-Proof 100% Cocoa-Free Chocolate Alternative with Max and Sara Marquart

"It's necessary that we create a future-proof chocolate brand to de-risk the core supply chain."  -Max Marquart

“A lot of people are aware that meat is bad for the planet, that cheese is bad for the planet. But most people don't know about the devastating effects of our enormous production of global cocoa harvesting. It’s important for consumers to get educated about the problems.” -Sara Marquart

    Episode Description:

Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, ruby chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, sweet chocolate, unsweetened chocolate -- How much do we love chocolates!

Globally, the number of chocolates consumed each year is estimated to be at least 7.2 metric tons. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the chocolate industry is now a billion-dollar empire.

Yet, this sweet treat has a bitter, darker secret. The cacao plant, the main component used in chocolate making, is a very controversial ingredient. It is strongly linked with deforestation and loss of biodiversity. With the high production demand, farmers are forced to clear forest lands and over use chemical fertilizers. These practices pollute the environment, affect human health, contribute to climate change, and displace animals that naturally inhabit the land. Moreover, history reveals that cacao farming is directly associated with increased poverty and child labor. In Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, the world's top producers of cocoa, there are 2.1 million children who still work in cacao fields. Sadly, even big chocolate companies have no way of telling whether there is no child labor involved in the cacaos they use in manufacturing.

Fortunately, startups and innovators are making noble attempts to create more sustainable chocolate alternatives. Max and Sara Marquart are one with this endeavor. This sibling duo has recently launched QOA, the world's first 100% cocoa-free, gluten-free, allergen-free, lactose-free chocolate. As their chocolate is made from by-products, the whole process does not come with significant human and environmental consequences.

Join us this week as Max and Sara share the processes that go with turning by-products into a future-proof chocolate brand, removing the risks in our supply chain, educating consumers to make more informed choices, and satisfying the world's needs without sacrificing sustainability. Tune in and learn how you can be part of the QOA mission!

Connect with Max and Sara Marquart:

Max and Sara are both scientists who love food, science, and sustainability. And in their quest to weave together their passions, QOA was born. QOA manufactures the world’s first-ever 100% cocoa-free chocolate alternative. With Sara’s expertise in food chemistry and Max’s ability to build and grow a business, this venture is now getting recognition in many parts of the world for its contribution especially in promoting sustainable practices and creating healthy food alternatives.

  • 007: The Unending Possibilities in Foodtech Venture Capitalism with Maximilian Bade

“A lot of intellectual curiosity we now have can influence the future of food because we develop something that has never been there before. And, while doing so, we also have a very positive impact on the planet because we can restructure how the value chain works.”  -Maximilian Bade

    Episode Description:

Technological advancements and modern innovations have truly revolutionized the food industry. And many more founders, innovators, and entrepreneurs are stepping up to the plate as we continue our quest for practical long-term solutions. They discuss what makes food tech different from other investment opportunities and the countless possibilities that come with it in terms of creating a healthier, more sustainable food system for humans and the environment. Max also talks about the biggest problem we have in the industry today, how to drive our intellectual curiosity towards the right direction, and the benefits of being an expert of one rather than a generalist.

The food industry can be divided into three: companies, regulatory boards, and consumers. If these components work together, we can restructure how the value chain works. Tune in and understand the different layers of what drives innovation.

  • 001: What’s All the Hoopla About Enhanced Health and Plant-Forward Diets with Meghan Adelman

“The way that you can frame up your diet and how you make your choices can make such a huge impact.” - Meghan Adelman

The market for organic products is now a billion-dollar industry. It is therefore no surprise that many companies claim to be "organic,” despite falling short of the actual rigorous standards that must be met to carry that label. Many so-called "organics" today are, in fact, heavily loaded with chemicals that harm the environment and negatively impact the health of consumers. So how do we know if the foods we’re eating are certified organic?

This week, Justine interviews Meghan Adelman, Co-Founder of Navitas Organics. As a Certified B-Corporation, Navitas holds powerful credibility as it is expected to balance profit and purpose. Meghan became a vegetarian when she was 15 because of a generational health problem that runs in her family. Eventually, she and her husband built Navitas, which serves as a platform that "supports people in making healthy choices."  Navitas has a wide array of super foods to choose from. Now, people can enjoy a tasty way to get back in shape and optimize their health.

In this episode, Justine and Meghan discuss how to create resilience in the food system and how upholding smallholder farmers can solve a variety of problems.
