The decline in this franchise is frankly shocking. A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 5: Dream Child (1989) follows its predecessor in a massive downward spiral. Is it worse than the previous film? Probably not, however the sting of the franchise's failure is becoming more painful as the awful entries continue. As usual this film does have the expected elements, but it finds a way to meander so much that it feels like a movie with no soul. Soulless or not we have a job to do here. Is it essential? How the mighty have fallen my friends. This film just does not live up remotely to the level that Dream Warriors set. Dream Master is a film that is filled to the brim with an incredibly boring story with occasional bits of wonderful practical effects. This might be one of the biggest examples of a franchise dropping in quality so steeply compared to the previous entries. We here on Essential Scares do not hold any ill will for bad horror films, in fact we celebrate them. However, this is just not one of them. To make sure that we can have the full crew here for Dream Warriors next week, Bobby found a little known Wes Craven film Shocker (1989)! This strange 3 in 1 film extravaganza HAS to be intentional, right? This movie really does grip the audience in a strange way compared to other films. It is this gory, potentially forgettable, slasher to start that transforms into a possession film in the middle. Yet it finishes as this strange romp through TV. All in all Shocker is strange, but is it essential?

Panned for years, Nightmare 2 was shockingly good all things considered. March 25, 2023 87. Aliens vs Predator Requiem (2007)
Often times a sequel finds ways to miss the entire point of giving us more of the franchise. AvP Requiem is the opposite of that. This movie 100% understands the assignment and just gives us so much more of Aliens and Predators going at it. There are PLENTY of throwaway characters to be fodder for the two alien lifeforms, fixing a major problem from the first movie instantly. For context, we watched the Unrated version of this film, and it will absolutely color your opinion negatively if you watch the theatrical cut instead of the unrated cut. Now, does this mean the movie is essential? It's a fantastic question with a surprising answer.

THE TRIFECTA IS BACK! It was Corbin's turn to pick and franchise and he chose one near and dear to his heart. Alien vs Predator (2004)! Some say this movie hasn't aged well, some say it is one of the worst examples of PG-13 Horror, and some even say this movie is aggressively mediocre. These statements are all objectively correct; however they don't explain just how weird of an experience it is to have seen this movie contemporary to when it released and then watching it again almost 20 years later with a critical eye. Just how critical are our eyes? Why does Bobby have a false memory involving this movie? Most importantly though, is it essential?

In the final episode of the Corbinless arc, Bobby and Allen break down just how purely mediocre See No Evil 2 (2014) truly is! Make no mistake it is CERTAINLY a better movie than its predecessor, however that is a hilariously low bar to pass. I'm potentially being a bit too harsh, but this film does not need to exist at all. Is it better? Yes. Did we enjoy it more? That's a little harder to answer. While See No Evil (2006) is awful, it is often quite funny. So what are we supposed to do with a movie that is better, but also worse? Why did they have to show THAT scene again? Is it essential?

In a week where Bobby and Allen have been given the reigns to the show while Corbin is off galivanting in Disney World the show basically goes off the rails without Corbin's guiding presence. Dear listener we knew this would happen so we filled these two weeks of Corbinlessness with a duology that does not need to taken seriously in any capacity, See No Evil. This movie is one of the most unintentionally funny film we have watched for the show in awhile. There is almost nothing to take seriously in this film even though the movie REALLY wants the audience to care for awful characters. How funny is it? Are there any chokeslams? Most importantly though, is it essential?

We have had an absolute blast coming back around and finishing this series off, which was not exactly what we expected. Found footage horror has a hard time capturing the magic of what makes it scary and intense, yet these 3 movies have managed to do it three separate times. Its astounding and very rare to see in the genre. However, we have a job to do on this show, and as you know that is to determine if Hell House LLC 3 is essential.
