The Law is given to Israel; they agree to be obedient to God as King. They rebel and God allows them to be attacked by foreign enemies. Israel cries out for help and God raises up a judge to save them. Every time the judge retires, the cycle of the kingdom unfaithfulness repeats. Under Samuel the last Israelite judge, Israel asks for a king like the other nations. God grants their request even though they reject Him as King. They remain disobedient and God sends them into exile, but this does not change His faithfulness to the promises to bless them. Through the line of David, God promises to raise up a king who will redeem the people and rule perfectly over all the nations forever.
