Chapter 9 brings us to the date when Haman's edict has finally come to pass. Thankfully Mordecai's new edict has also been enacted allowing the Jewish people to defend themselves.

Even though we can clearly see that the Jewish people were on the defence, not offence, we know that there are times throughout their history when God commands them to be on the offence. How do we reconcile this with the fact that God is a loving God? How do we reconcile the judgement of God in the Old Testament with Jesus in the New Testament telling his disciples to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them?
