Throughout the book of Esther, we find that pride rears its ugly head in the person of Haman. Though he was very wealthy and was second in the kingdom, he was very disturbed by the fact that Mordecai would not bow down to him. Even Haman himself said that all the wealth and honor he got meant nothing to him as long as he saw Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate (Esther 5:13). His "thanklessness" went hand-in-hand with his pride.
