Description: Estonia_TUIT genetically engineers baker’s yeast to produce melanin, a black pigment that bakers yeast normally do not produce, and which is known to absorb radiation. To do that, we overexpress tyrosinase, an enzyme that converts common amino acid tyrosine into melanin. Synthesized melanin is anchored by a melanin-binding peptide on the cell surface and creates a radiation scavenger layer.
