    Psalm 101 (Listen)
    I Will Walk with Integrity
    A Psalm of David.

    101   I will sing of steadfast love and justice;
        to you, O LORD, I will make music.
    2   I will ponder the way that is blameless.
        Oh when will you come to me?
      I will walk with integrity of heart
        within my house;
    3   I will not set before my eyes
        anything that is worthless.
      I hate the work of those who fall away;
        it shall not cling to me.
    4   A perverse heart shall be far from me;
        I will know nothing of evil.
    5   Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly
        I will destroy.
      Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart
        I will not endure.
    6   I will look with favor on the faithful in the land,
        that they may dwell with me;
      he who walks in the way that is blameless
        shall minister to me.
    7   No one who practices deceit
        shall dwell in my house;
      no one who utters lies
        shall continue before my eyes.
    8   Morning by morning I will destroy
        all the wicked in the land,
      cutting off all the evildoers
        from the city of the LORD.

    Psalm 109:1–30 (Listen)
    Help Me, O Lord My God
    To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

    109   Be not silent, O God of my praise!
    2   For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me,
        speaking against me with lying tongues.
    3   They encircle me with words of hate,
        and attack me without cause.
    4   In return for my love they accuse me,
        but I give myself to prayer.Hebrew but I am prayer">1
    5   So they reward me evil for good,
        and hatred for my love.
    6   Appoint a wicked man against him;
        let an accuser stand at his right hand.
    7   When he is tried, let him come forth guilty;
        let his prayer be counted as sin!
    8   May his days be few;
        may another take his office!
    9   May his children be fatherless
        and his wife a widow!
    10   May his children wander about and beg,
        seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit!
    11   May the creditor seize all that he has;
        may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil!
    12   Let there be none to extend kindness to him,
        nor any to pity his fatherless children!
    13   May his posterity be cut off;
        may his name be blotted out in the second generation!
    14   May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD,
        and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out!
    15   Let them be before the LORD continually,
        that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth!
    16   For he did not remember to show kindness,
        but pursued the poor and needy
        and the brokenhearted, to put them to death.

        of those who speak evil against my life!
    21   But you, O GOD my Lord,
        deal on my behalf for your name’s sake;
        because your steadfast love is good, deliver me!
    22   For I am poor and needy,
        and my heart is stricken within me.
    23   I am gone like a shadow at evening;
        I am shaken off like a locust.
    24   My knees are weak through fasting;
        my body has become gaunt, with no fat.
    25   I am an object of scorn to my accusers;
        when they see me, they wag their heads.
    26   Help me, O LORD my God!
        Save me according to your steadfast love!
    27   Let them know that this is your hand;
        you, O LORD, have done it!
    28   Let them curse, but you will bless!
        They arise and are put to shame, but your servant will be glad!
    29   May my accusers be clothed with dishonor;
        may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a cloak!
    30   With my mouth I will give great thanks to the LORD;
        I will praise him in the midst of the throng.

    125   I am your servant; give me understanding,
        that I may know your testimonies!
    126   It is time for the LORD to act,
        for your law has been broken.
    127   Therefore I love your commandments
        above gold, above fine gold.
    128   Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right;
        I hate every false way.

    129   Your testimonies are wonderful;
        therefore my soul keeps them.
    130   The unfolding of your words gives light;
        it imparts understanding to the simple.
    131   I open my mouth and pant,
        because I long for your commandments.
    132   Turn to me and be gracious to me,
        as is your way with those who love your name.
    133   Keep steady my steps according to your promise,
        and let no iniquity get dominion over me.
    134   Redeem me from man’s oppression,
        that I may keep your precepts.
    135   Make your face shine upon your servant,
        and teach me your statutes.
    136   My eyes shed streams of tears,
        because people do not keep your law.

    137   Righteous are you, O LORD,
        and right are your rules.
    138   You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness
        and in all faithfulness.
    139   My zeal consumes me,
        because my foes forget your words.
    140   Your promise is well tried,
        and your servant loves it.
    141   I am small and despised,
        yet I do not forget your precepts.

    The New Jerusalem

    9 Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed—13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

    15 And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. 16 The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia.About 1,380 miles; a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters">1 Its length and width and height are equal. 17 He also measured its wall, 144 cubitsA cubit was about 18 inches or 45 centimeters">2 by human measurement, which is also an angel’s measurement. 18 The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

    Judgment Before the Great White Throne

    11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The Transfiguration

    17 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son,Or my Son, my (or the) Beloved">1 with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

    9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” 11 He answered, “Elijah does come, and he will restore all things. 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

    17 After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. 18 When they had examined me, they wished to set me at liberty, because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case. 19 But because the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar—though I had no charge to bring against my nation. 20 For this reason, therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am wearing this chain.” 21 And they said to him, “We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of the brothers coming here has reported or spoken any evil about you. 22 But we desire to hear from you what your views are, for with regard to this sect we know that everywhere it is spoken against.”

    23 When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.

    The Thousand Years

    20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pitGreek the abyss; also verse 3">1 and a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.

    4 Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

    88   O LORD, God of my salvation,

    3   For my soul is full of troubles,

        like the slain that lie in the grave,
      like those whom you remember no more,

        abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
    6   Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer;
        listen to my plea for grace.
    7   In the day of my trouble I call upon you,
        for you answer me.
    8   There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
        nor are there any works like yours.
    9   All the nations you have made shall come
        and worship before you, O Lord,
        and shall glorify your name.
    10   For you are great and do wondrous things;
        you alone are God.
    11   Teach me your way, O LORD,
        that I may walk in your truth;
        unite my heart to fear your name.
    12   I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
        and I will glorify your name forever.
    13   For great is your steadfast love toward me;
        you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
    14   O God, insolent men have risen up against me;
        a band of ruthless men seeks my life,
        and they do not set you before them.
    15   But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,

      The smoke from her goes up forever and ever.”

    4 And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!” 5 And from the throne came a voice saying,

      “Praise our God,
        all you his servants,
      you who fear him,
        small and great.”

    The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

    6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,

      “Hallelujah!
      For the Lord our God
        the Almighty reigns.
    7   Let us rejoice and exult
        and give him the glory,
      for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
        and his Bride has made herself ready;
    8   it was granted her to clothe herself
        with fine linen, bright and pure”—

    for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.

    9 And the angel saidGreek he said">1 to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” 10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

    The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

    The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

    5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

    And when the seventh month had come, the people of Israel were in their towns.

    Ezra Reads the Law

    8 And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the LORD had commanded Israel. 2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. 3 And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.

And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites,Vulgate; Hebrew and the Levites">1 helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. 8 They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly,Or with interpretation, or paragraph by paragraph">2 and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.

    This Day Is Holy

    9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” 11 So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

    Feast of Booths Celebrated

    13 On the second day the heads of fathers’ houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came together to Ezra the scribe in order to study the words of the Law. 14 And they found it written in the Law that the LORD had commanded by Moses that the people of Israel should dwell in boothsOr temporary shelters">3 during the feast of the seventh month, 15 and that they should proclaim it and publish it in all their towns and in Jerusalem, “Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.” 16 So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at the Water Gate and in the square at the Gate of Ephraim. 17 And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in the booths, for from the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the people of Israel had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing. 18 And day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. They kept the feast seven days, and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the rule.

    Jesus Heals Many

    29 Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there. 30 And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, 31 so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.

    Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

    32 Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 33 And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” 34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 38 Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.

    Tell the Coming Generation
    A MaskilProbably a musical or liturgical term">1 of Asaph.

    78   Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
        incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
    2   I will open my mouth in a parable;
        I will utter dark sayings from of old,
    3   things that we have heard and known,
        that our fathers have told us.
    4   We will not hide them from their children,
        but tell to the coming generation
      the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might,
        and the wonders that he has done.
    5   He established a testimony in Jacob
        and appointed a law in Israel,
      which he commanded our fathers
        to teach to their children,
    6   that the next generation might know them,
        the children yet unborn,
      and arise and tell them to their children,
    7     so that they should set their hope in God
      and not forget the works of God,
        but keep his commandments;
    8   and that they should not be like their fathers,
        a stubborn and rebellious generation,
      a generation whose heart was not steadfast,
        whose spirit was not faithful to God.
    9   The Ephraimites, armed withHebrew armed and shooting">2 the bow,
        turned back on the day of battle.
    10   They did not keep God’s covenant,
        but refused to walk according to his law.
    11   They forgot his works
        and the wonders that he had shown them.
    12   In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders
        in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.
    13   He divided the sea and let them pass through it,
        and made the waters stand like a heap.
    14   In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
        and all the night with a fiery light.
    15   He split rocks in the wilderness
        and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
    16   He made streams come out of the rock
        and caused waters to flow down like rivers.
    17   Yet they sinned still more against him,
        rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
    18   They tested God in their heart
        by demanding the food they craved.
    19   They spoke against God, saying,
        “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?
    20   He struck the rock so that water gushed out
        and streams overflowed.
      Can he also give bread
        or provide meat for his people?”
    21   Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath;
        a fire was kindled against Jacob;
        his anger rose against Israel,
    22   because they did not believe in God
        and did not trust his saving power.
    23   Yet he commanded the skies above
        and opened the doors of heaven,
    24   and he rained down on them manna to eat
        and gave them the grain of heaven.
    25   Man ate of the bread of the angels;
        he sent them food in abundance.
    26   He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,
        and by his power he led out the south wind;
    27   he rained meat on them like dust,
        winged birds like the sand of the seas;
    28   he let them fall in the midst of their camp,
        all around their dwellings.
    29   And they ate and were well filled,
        for he gave them what they craved.
    30   But before they had satisfied their craving,
        while the food was still in their mouths,
    31   the anger of God rose against them,
        and he killed the strongest of them
        and laid low the young men of Israel.
    32   In spite of all this, they still sinned;
        despite his wonders, they did not believe.
    33   So he made their days vanish likeHebrew in">3 a breath,Or vapor">4
        and their years in terror.
    34   When he killed them, they sought him;
        they repented and sought God earnestly.
    35   They remembered that God was their rock,
        the Most High God their redeemer.
    36   But they flattered him with their mouths;
        they lied to him with their tongues.
    37   Their heart was not steadfast toward him;
        they were not faithful to his covenant.
    38   Yet he, being compassionate,
        atoned for their iniquity
        and did not destroy them;
      he restrained his anger often
        and did not stir up all his wrath.
    39   He remembered that they were but flesh,
        a wind that passes and comes not again.

    45   He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them,
        and frogs, which destroyed them.
    46   He gave their crops to the destroying locust

    47   He destroyed their vines with hail

    48   He gave over their cattle to the hail

    49   He let loose on them his burning anger,

    50   He made a path for his anger;

        but gave their lives over to the plague.
    51   He struck down every firstborn in Egypt,
        the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.
    52   Then he led out his people like sheep
        and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
    53   He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid,
        but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
    54   And he brought them to his holy land,
        to the mountain which his right hand had won.
    55   He drove out nations before them;
        he apportioned them for a possession
        and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
    56   Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God
        and did not keep his testimonies,
    57   but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;
        they twisted like a deceitful bow.
    58   For they provoked him to anger with their high places;
        they moved him to jealousy with their idols.
    59   When God heard, he was full of wrath,
        and he utterly rejected Israel.
    60   He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh,
        the tent where he dwelt among mankind,
    61   and delivered his power to captivity,
        his glory to the hand of the foe.
    62   He gave his people over to the sword
        and vented his wrath on his heritage.
    63   Fire devoured their young men,
        and their young women had no marriage song.
    64   Their priests fell by the sword,
        and their widows made no lamentation.
    65   Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
        like a strong man shouting because of wine.
    66   And he put his adversaries to rout;
        he put them to everlasting shame.
    67   He rejected the tent of Joseph;
        he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
    68   but he chose the tribe of Judah,
        Mount Zion, which he loves.
    69   He built his sanctuary like the high heavens,
        like the earth, which he has founded forever.
    70   He chose David his servant

    71   from following the nursing ewes he brought him

And in the time of their suffering they cried out to you and you heard them from heaven, and according to your great mercies you gave them saviors who saved them from the hand of their enemies. 28 But after they had rest they did evil again before you, and you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies, so that they had dominion over them. Yet when they turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven, and many times you delivered them according to your mercies. 29 And you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. Yet they acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments, but sinned against your rules, which if a person does them, he shall live by them, and they turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not obey. 30 Many years you bore with them and warned them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet they would not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. 31 Nevertheless, in your great mercies you did not make an end of them or forsake them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.

    32 “Now, therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love, let not all the hardship seem little to you that has come upon us, upon our kings, our princes, our priests, our prophets, our fathers, and all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria until this day. 33 Yet you have been righteous in all that has come upon us, for you have dealt faithfully and we have acted wickedly. 34 Our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept your law or paid attention to your commandments and your warnings that you gave them. 35 Even in their own kingdom, and amid your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and rich land that you set before them, they did not serve you or turn from their wicked works. 36 Behold, we are slaves this day; in the land that you gave to our fathers to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts, behold, we are slaves. 37 And its rich yield goes to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and over our livestock as they please, and we are in great distress.

    The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

    21 And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” 23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.Greek from that hour">1

Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

    Septuagint adds And Ezra said">2

    6 “You are the LORD, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you. 7 You are the LORD, the God who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name Abraham. 8 You found his heart faithful before you, and made with him the covenant to give to his offspring the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite. And you have kept your promise, for you are righteous.

    9 “And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard their cry at the Red Sea, 10 and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that they acted arrogantly against our fathers. And you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day. 11 And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land, and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into mighty waters. 12 By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go. 13 You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14 and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant. 15 You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and you told them to go in to possess the land that you had sworn to give them.

    16 “But they and our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments. 17 They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt.Some Hebrew manuscripts; many Hebrew manuscripts and in their rebellion appointed a leader to return to their slavery">3 But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them. 18 Even when they had made for themselves a goldenHebrew metal">4 calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed great blasphemies, 19 you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.

    22 “And you gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner. So they took possession of the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan. 23 You multiplied their children as the stars of heaven, and you brought them into the land that you had told their fathers to enter and possess. 24 So the descendants went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hand, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would. 25 And they captured fortified cities and a rich land, and took possession of houses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in your great goodness.
