Asian stocks were mixed Thursday amid renewed geopolitical concerns after American officials rejected Russia’s claims that it has begun to remove troops from Ukraine’s borders. In Asia, Japanese shares slipped but South Korea advanced following a small S&P 500 gain Wednesday.

The domestic benchmark indices settled the highly volatile session lower amid the evolving geopolitical situation. Banks and metal stocks were under pressure, whereas realty, pharma and auto names gave much-needed support to the indices.

Asian stocks rose Wednesday as traders evaluated the prospect of diminishing geopolitical tension over Ukraine after Russia said it was withdrawing some forces. Shares climbed in Japan, South Korea and Australia.

Bottom hunters gathered to push the markets higher while the ease in the tension between Russia and Ukraine lifted the mood of the market. A decline in crude oil prices also aided investor sentiments.

The dollar and safe-haven currencies held gains and riskier ones struggled for traction on Monday, with traders on edge about the prospect of war in Europe and unsettled by soaring inflation. Oil prices on Monday hit their highest in more than seven years on fears that a possible invasion of Ukraine by Russia could trigger US and European sanctions that would disrupt exports from the world's top producer in an already tight market.
