  • #43 | Interview - Gerard Barron, Chairman & CEO at Deep Green Metals
For this episode of the eTech podcast Ryan Maughan speaks to Gerard Barron, who is the Chairman and CEO of DeepGreen Metals.

We discuss the potential for the sustainable recovery of metals, including the Nickel, Copper and Cobalt required for electric vehicle and battery production, from deep-ocean nodules found in the Pacific Ocean’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone.

The supply of the metals needed for EV batteries is a hot topic right now and deep-sea mining offers a potential, low-impact solution. However, deep-sea mining is a controversial topic. Gerard and Ryan discuss the issues, benefits and challenges giving a thoughtful insight into the potential of this resource.

Remember to subscribe, rate and comment! We love to hear any feedback or questions you may have. Also, make sure to check our back catalogue of videos and podcasts to learn more about the technology that goes into electric vehicles!

  • #42 | Interview - Steve Dodds, Technology Manager at TWI Ltd.
Apologies for the delay in releasing this our latest episode. We hope you all had a great Christmas and start to the new year! In our first episode of 2020, we bring you an interview with Steve Dodds, head of Friction & Forge Processes at TWI based in Cambridge, U.K.

Steve educated us on 'friction stir welding' which is a solid-state joining process that uses frictional heat generated by a rotating tool to join materials. This is a process used in many applications but interestingly it is used on all modern space rockets, and also more importantly to us, on electric vehicles when the battery enclosure is manufactured. We are sure you will learn a lot from this episode.

If there are any other subjects you would like us to cover or guests you would like us to interview please let us know via our website, or on any of our social media pages. We would love to hear from you!

If you enjoyed this episode, please take a minute to subscribe to the show, and show us some love by rating our podcast so that others with the same love of EV technology can find our show.

  • #36 | Tesla Model S vs Porsche Taycan vs Audi e-Tron
In this episode, we look specifically at the Audi e-Tron, Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S and examine the powertrain differences to try to get to the bottom of the range difference by covering the various factors that affect their efficiency.

How have the Germans missed the target with their first EV offerings failed to beat the performance of the much older American EV with their huge resources and the most up to date technology?

  • #35 | Interview - Mihai Dorobantu, Director of Technology Planning and Government Affairs at Eaton
In today's episode, we bring you our recent interview with Mihai Dorobantu the Director of Technology Planning and Government Affairs at Eaton. Eaton is huge global company with 99,000 employees and is a global leader in power transmission systems for heavy-duty automotive vehicles. They also have a huge non-automotive business in electrical power and distribution so they are potentially ideally positioned as the market transitions to electrified powertrains.

Being one of the first companies to launch a dedicated hybrid transmission system for heavy-duty, as well as numerous transmission variants for fully electric vehicles has allowed Eaton to learn and innovate leading to some interesting and surprising results that Mihai and Ryan discussed at length.

We covered the following questions and more:

    - Is single-speed the best solution for electric vehicle powertrain?
    - What are the reasons for investigating a multi-speed gearbox in a fully electric vehicle?
    - How can transmission technology help to significantly extend the range and performance of electric and hybrid vehicles?
