In 1543, the Ethiopian Empire faced extinction. The Adal Sultanate, led by Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi—known as Ahmad Gragn, 'the Left-Handed'—had ravaged the highlands, burning churches and forcing Emperor Lebna Dengel into hiding. After Lebna Dengel's death, his teenage son Gelawdewos inherited a crumbling realm. But a tiny Portuguese contingent armed with matchlock muskets had arrived at Massawa. Led by Cristóvão da Gama, son of the explorer Vasco, they joined forces with Ethiopian soldiers near Lake Tana. The two armies met at Wayna Daga, a steep valley in the Semien Mountains. Gragn's cavalry charges were shredded by Portuguese fire. In the chaos, Gragn was shot dead—by some accounts by a Portuguese marksman named Francisco Dias or by Gelawdewos's own hand. His severed head was paraded, and his army scattered. This episode explores the battle that saved Christian Ethiopia, the uneasy alliance with Portugal, and the legends surrounding Gragn's death. We also consider the cost: the Oromo migrations accelerated, and Ethiopia slid into new conflicts. No other episode of Fexingo History has covered this decisive clash.

This episode delves into the tumultuous reign of Emperor Tewodros II, who rose from obscurity as Kassa Hailu to unify Ethiopia during the chaotic Era of the Princes. Driven by a vision to modernize his empire, he built factories, attempted to create a navy, and clashed with the powerful Ethiopian Orthodox Church. However, his volatile temper and diplomatic blunders led to a catastrophic confrontation with the British Empire. The Napier Expedition of 1868, a massive military force including elephants and advanced artillery, marched over 400 miles to his fortress at Maqdala. There, Tewodros made his last stand, choosing suicide over capture. We also explore the tragic fate of his young son, Prince Alemayehu, who was taken to England, and the legacy of Tewodros as both a unifying force and a cautionary tale of overreach. His story is a crucial chapter in Ethiopian history, bridging the medieval past and the modern imperial era.

In 1896, Ethiopia stunned the world by defeating a European colonial power at the Battle of Adwa. Emperor Menelik II, his wife Empress Taytu Betul, and a coalition of traditionally rival armies united against Italy's attempt to turn Ethiopia into a protectorate. This episode dives into the diplomatic miscalculations — the mistranslated Article 17 of the Treaty of Wuchale — the massive Ethiopian mobilization, and Taytu Betul's crucial role in leading troops and cutting Italian supply lines. We explore how Ethiopia's victory not only preserved its independence but inspired anti-colonial movements across Africa. Learn about the weaponry, the terrain at Adwa, and how the battle reshaped the Horn of Africa for decades. A story of strategy, resilience, and a rare 19th-century African triumph over imperialism.

In this episode of Ethiopia's Ancient Empire: Africa's Hidden Superpower, Lucas and Luna explore the 16th-century Oromo migrations that reshaped the Horn of Africa. Known as the Oromo expansion or the great Oromo population movement, this period saw Oromo pastoralists move from the Bale highlands into the Ethiopian highlands, conquering and settling vast territories. The episode covers the Battle of Ansata (already detailed in episode 162) as a backdrop, but focuses on how the Oromo, under the Gadaa system of governance, introduced new military tactics like the luba age-grade system, which allowed them to field disciplined armies. Learn about key figures such as the Oromo leader Oromos, the impact on the Abyssinian Empire under Emperor Sarsa Dengel, and the cultural and political integration that followed. We discuss the Oromo's interaction with the Adal Sultanate, the Harari city-state, and the weakening of both Christian and Muslim powers. The episode also touches on the Oromo's adoption of Islam and Christianity, and their lasting influence on Ethiopian identity. No clickbait—just a nuanced look at a transformative era that is often overshadowed by more famous conflicts.

In 1930, Ras Tafari Makonnen was crowned Emperor Haile Selassie I, taking the title 'Lion of Judah' and ushering in a new era for Ethiopia. This episode explores the coronation ceremony at St. George's Cathedral in Addis Ababa, blending ancient Solomonic tradition with modern pageantry. Lucas and Luna discuss the political maneuvering that brought Tafari to power after Empress Zewditu's death, the drafting of Ethiopia's first constitution in 1931, and the emperor's push for modernization—including the abolition of slavery and the introduction of a national army. They delve into the 1935 Italian invasion and Haile Selassie's impassioned speech to the League of Nations, a pivotal moment that framed Ethiopia's struggle as a global anti-fascist cause. The conversation also touches on the Rastafari movement's veneration of the emperor, the political intrigue of the post-war era, and the lingering controversies of his rule. This episode offers a nuanced portrait of a complex figure who stood at the intersection of tradition and reform, sovereignty and colonialism.

In this episode of Ethiopia's Ancient Empire: Africa's Hidden Superpower, Lucas and Luna explore the little-known story of the Abbay River — the Blue Nile — and its outsized role in Ethiopian history. From ancient Aksumite water management to medieval monastic settlements on Lake Tana's islands, the river shaped trade, religion, and politics for millennia. They discuss how the 17th-century emperor Susenyos tried and failed to dam the Blue Nile at its source, a project that would have altered the course of Egyptian history. They also uncover the 14th-century 'Lake Tana Manuscripts' — Ge'ez biblical texts hidden in island monasteries during religious persecutions, rediscovered only in the 20th century. The episode touches on the 1956 'Abbay Bridge' construction by Haile Selassie's government, connecting Ethiopia's north and south. Along the way, they examine the river's symbolic role in Ethiopian Christianity, where it is often called 'the River of Paradise' in Ge'ez hymnody. A rich dive into how a single waterway wove together the threads of an ancient empire.

In the early 17th century, Ethiopia's Emperor Susenyos made a decision that nearly tore his kingdom apart: he converted from Orthodox Christianity to Catholicism, aligning with Portuguese Jesuit missionaries who had arrived seeking allies against Muslim powers. This episode explores Susenyos's reign—his military victories, the controversial Council of Derssanie where he declared Catholicism the state religion, and the brutal rebellion that forced him to abdicate. We discuss the role of Jesuit priest Pedro Páez, the resistance of Empress Yodit and the Orthodox clergy, and how Susenyos's experiment ended with his son Fasilides restoring the Tewahedo faith and expelling the Jesuits. The episode also examines the long-term consequences: the isolation of Ethiopia from European influence for over two centuries, and the preservation of its unique Christian traditions. A tale of faith, power, and identity in the Horn of Africa.

Long before Ahmad Gragn's invasion, Emperor Lebna Dengel (Dawit II) tried to modernize Ethiopia's military with imported firearms. This episode reveals how the first Ethiopian ruler to acquire matchlock muskets and cannons from the Portuguese struggled to integrate gunpowder weapons into an ancient army built around cavalry. We follow his failed 1520s campaigns against the Adal Sultanate, the capture of Portuguese firearms by Imam Ahmad, and the devastating consequence: Gragn's army turned those same guns against Ethiopian monasteries and cities. Drawing on the Futuh al-Habasha and Portuguese records, we explore why adoption of new technology stalled, the role of foreign mercenaries, and how this arms race reshaped the Horn of Africa's balance of power for centuries.

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the reign of Emperor Ezana of Axum, the ruler who transformed his kingdom into the first Christian state in history — decades before Rome. They trace Ezana's conversion under the influence of his tutor Frumentius, the geopolitical calculus behind adopting Christianity, and the archaeological evidence of the shift from polytheism to monotheism. Lucas delves into the famous Ezana Stone, a trilingual inscription in Ge'ez, Sabaean, and Greek that records Axum's conquest of Kush (Meroë) and Ezana's new title 'King of Kings.' They discuss the role of the Red Sea trade, the rivalry with Himyarite Jews, and Ezana's expansion into Yemen. The episode also touches on the controversy over whether Axum's conversion was genuine or political, and the legacy of Frumentius, later canonized as Abune Selama. With references to the Kebra Nagast, the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, and the mysterious Ark of the Covenant traditions, this episode uncovers how a small East African kingdom became a Christian superpower.
