The journey of genuine transformation to emotionally healthy spirituality begins with a commitment to allow yourself to feel. Feelings are an essential part of our humanity and unique personhood as men and women created in God's image. Scripture reveals Jesus as an emotional being who feels as a person. Having been created in His image, we also are created with the gift to feel and experience emotions. Some of us may have learned that feelings are not to be trusted; that they are dangerous and can lead us away from God's will for our lives. While it is true that we are not to be led by our emotions, they do serve a critical function in our emotional health and ultimately in our relationship with God.

Without a theological and practical understanding of limits, we compromise our ability to love God, ourselves, and others over the long haul of our lives. Understanding the limits that are on our lives is a good thing and a deeply spiritual issue as well. It is true that some people need to become more aware of being lazy but for most people, we spend much of our time doing things beyond our limitations. God’s limitations on our lives are a gift that protect us, keep us grounded and humble, and break our self-will. They are God’s means of giving us direction, wisdom, and encounters with Himself

Why are so many of us living lives with deeply entrenched parts of us apparently untouched by the power and mercy of Jesus? For most of us, it is due to a resistance to looking at our own past and unwillingness to wrestle with its implications. As a result, we limit our spiritual maturity and struggle to grow in healthy relationships. Scripture and life teach us that an intricate, complex relationship exists between the kind of person we are today and our past. We must recognize that we have been shaped by things other than our status as children of God who have been made right by Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must do the hard work of discipleship that is necessary to let go of unbiblical ways of living and to learn to live in true freedom.

“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed – not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence – continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For God is at work within you both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”

We hear the language “follower of Jesus” all the time, but what does it really mean? Put simply, it means we reorganize our life around three goals; be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what Jesus did. That’s it. But that is an entire life’s pursuit, it does not happen overnight. It is not about trying, it is about training, and it is not just an event on a Sunday, but a “way” of life in community around the teachings of Jesus. To live this way means we need to be transformed, from the inside out. Through teaching, practice, community, and the Holy Spirit, we learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus, not simply a Christian.

“The greatest issue facing the world today, with all its heart-breaking needs, is whether those who are identified as Christians will become disciples – students, apprentices, practitioners – of Jesus Christ. Steadily learning from Him how to live the life of the Kingdom of Heaven into every corner of human existence.”

As we move forward together as followers of Jesus, we need partners for this journey, a community to help us along the way. Jesus invites all who follow him to be a part of a new family. This family of God is not a social club or a group of friends who look, think, and talk similarly. But rather a community of people committed to following Jesus’ way of life. And despite the work it takes, the fights we will endure, and the learning we will do along the way; together we are figuring out how to be with Jesus, become like him, and do what he did.

“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”

Jesus likened his community to a family. At first this sounds nice and even sentimental, but actually this was one of Jesus’ most radical ideas, one that got him killed. It was radical in the first century, and it’s just as radical in the 21st century. In this teaching we will discover and learn why.

“Jesus replied, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Then He looked at those around him and said, “Look, these are my mothers and brothers. Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

Much has been said and written about the differences between each generation in our nation. Unfortunately, there is a generational divide that inhibits God’s people from working together on God’s agenda, but it doesn’t have to be that way. In this teaching, we are exploring what it would take and what it could look like for a community of Jesus followers to be so committed to passing the baton of faith from one generation to the next. That even our very differences would lead us to God’s plan for us, for the future. We all play a part in helping the next generation win so let’s build together.
