What if your medical record simply followed you to any hospital in Europe? Martin Dorazil, deputy head of unit at the European Commission, explains how the European Health Data Space will make this a reality. 

The EHDS is built around two pillars. The first gives patients better access to and control over their own health data. You will be able to decide which healthcare provider can view your records. The second pillar opens up large datasets for research, innovation and policymaking. Researchers will no longer have to guess whether relevant data even exists. 

Through a European catalogue, datasets become discoverable and accessible via new health data access bodies. Dorazil emphasises that privacy protection is at the core of the entire design. A conversation about how Europe plans to achieve interoperability of health data and what that means for daily clinical practice.
