Autism and Parenting

Every child is different

Listen Later

Parents dream of seeing their children accomplish success in all endeavors, but little do they realize that every child has a different growth story. It is quite a prevalent practice for parents to make every possible effort to bolster their child's performance. They feel that this will enhance children’s learning and skills, but on the contrary, it affects their confidence level negatively. Also, it is essential for the parents to know that there are various factors that contribute to the development of a child, and that includes his physical and mental ability and his learning environment. Children with Autism need additional help, time, and simplification of things.
Firstly, before you start any interventions, It is imperative to build a bond of love and trust with children. For this I used to:
- Acknowledge his gestures and sounds (giving a feeling to him of being heard)
- Doing activities of his choice throughout the day
- Blabber sounds with him
- Singing poems for him now and then
- Maintain longer eye contact with a calm and smiling face on his eye level (with time he started passing a smile back to me)
You may be the parent or the therapist; either way, rapport is important. Otherwise, the child may only be establishing desired behaviors only because they want access to the reinforcer. Although that is often highly effective, it is only temporary, and the control lies with the child, not you. This means that it is up to the child to decide on his behavior.
Secondly, do not compare your child with anyone else’s. This will give you a feeling of frustration and will add up to your challenges. Value your kid’s achievements and celebrate them. Kids are not objects for social show-offs.
