  • 297 - A quick story about an interaction with a fan while after a game I officiated
Most officials, I know love, talking about plays, and the opportunity to get better. My partner and I were approached by a mother of a player on the winning team, who whipped out her phone and was real quick to accuse us of the worst call she’s ever seen. We click the dismissed her, and here’s what I wish, I did. I wish I paused, and slowed the entire situation down, and I wish I asked her if she was sure of the example she wanted to set for her six or seven-year-old daughter, who was in Tobey behind her. Myself as an official, and most officials, I know, are happy to review and talk about plays. A moment, it turns disrespectful, fans, parents, coaches, lose that opportunity

  • 294- forced family fun
One of my old college basketball teammates introduced me to the concept of muting the television, while the commercials were on. It’s something I’ve done ever since, and another lesson in attention.

  • 293 - the first lesson I’m teaching our daughter

Our daughter is almost 5 months old now, and she’s the greatest thing in the whole world. I am so lucky and blessed that I get to be her mom.

Do you know WHY I end every episode with ‘I appreciate you, thank you for spending some time with me today?’ (I borrowed this from Lewis Howes’ School of Greatness podcast)

I’m now aware that it’s because our ATTENTION is our most valuable asset. Some may argue that it’s time, others may say it’s money. But to me, our ATTENTION is more valuable than both. Because with time, we can spend time together and both be scrolling on our phones or watching TV or reading. With money, well there are plenty of ways to make and spend money quickly, and you can always earn more money. Time is a very limited asset. Attention is a VALUABLE asset. Your attention is why companies can advertise during the superbowl for millions of dollars. Your ATTENTION is why tick tok and instagram and facebook want you on their platforms, so their advertisers can reach you and grab your attention. Your ATTENTION is why there are panic headlines and paywalls behind them.

Where you spend your attention directly impacts the quality of your life.

As we’re becoming parents and figuring out how we want to foster and guide our baby, it’s becoming clear that she’s right now, too little to understand much of what we say. She certainly understands who we are and what we do. It’s evident by the giant smile that takes up her whole face when we greet her from a nap, or when we come home from work. She knows it’s us. And because she’s our baby, we give her TONS of attention. But if we walked into the room and ignored her, or didn’t look up from our phones or our book or stayed on the phone with a friend or colleague, we’re showing our daughter what’s important to us by where are ATTENTION is.

So I end every episode with gratitude towards you, because if you’re choosing to spend your most valuable asset with me (in my eyes, it’s your attention)
