The Myth of Achilles

Achilles, son of the sea goddess Thetis and the mortal king Peleus, was destined for both greatness and tragedy. To protect him, his mother dipped him into the River Styx—rendering him invulnerable everywhere except the heel she held. Famed as the mightiest warrior of the Trojan War, Achilles’ power was matched only by his heart’s depth. His love for Patroclus, his closest companion and confidant, revealed a tenderness beneath the armor. When Patroclus was slain in battle, Achilles’ grief consumed him, leading to both vengeance and his own downfall by a fatal arrow to his heel.

Achilles as a Queer ArchetypeAchilles’ story is one of tenderness wrapped in valor, love beneath armor. Ancient poets described his relationship with Patroclus as closer than blood—each half of the other’s soul. To queer readers, this love defied the rigid masculine ideals of its time, showing that vulnerability and affection could coexist with power.

The Myth of AphroditeLong before she was the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite was a fusion of older deities—Ishtar, Astarte, and Inanna—goddesses of war, fertility, and cosmic power. She was not simply beauty or romance, but the force of life itself: ruling birth, death, art, and desire. Born from sea foam after Uranus’s severed body fell into the waves, Aphrodite emerged fully formed from both masculine and feminine origins. She was worshiped from Cyprus to Rome as Venus, Queen of Heaven and Sea, goddess of pleasure and fate.

Aphrodite as a Queer DeityAphrodite’s queerness shines through her multiplicity. In Cyprus, statues depict her with both beard and breasts, embodying gender fluidity long before modern language for it existed. Ancient writers called her Aphroditos, the male aspect of the goddess, honored through cross-dressing rituals where men wore women’s garments and women wore men’s.

Aphrodite’s energy appears throughout the tarot wherever beauty, balance, and intimacy unfold. Together, these cards celebrate Aphrodite’s lesson: that love, in all its forms, is revolutionary.

The Myth of PoseidonBorn of Kronos and Rhea and brother to Zeus and Hades, Poseidon rose as lord of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. With his trident he could call up storms or still the waters, shake the earth, and usher in fertility or drought. Older strands of the myth remember him less as an Olympian conqueror and more as the Spouse of Earth—a primal, generative force tied to the ocean’s cyclical power. 

Poseidon as a Queer DeityAncient texts and odes hint at Poseidon’s fluid desire and love beyond gender. In one story, he takes the youth Pelops as a lover and companion, teaching him to drive the divine chariot and gifting him winged horses. Like many Greek gods, Poseidon’s relationships defied modern labels, rooted instead in eros and power, mentorship and mythic connection. As a queer archetype, Poseidon embodies emotional fluidity and non-binary affection.

Poseidon & TarotPoseidon’s energy flows through the tarot where emotion, intuition, and balance collide. Together, these cards capture Poseidon’s lesson: to embrace our depths without drowning in them, and to find equilibrium between feeling and form.

The Myth of IshtarIshtar—also known as Inanna or Astarte—was worshiped as the Queen of Heaven, ruler of fertility, desire, and the cycles of life and death. She appears in the Epic of Gilgamesh as a radiant goddess of both love and warfare, capable of granting abundance or unleashing chaos.

In one of her most famous myths, Ishtar descends into the Underworld to rescue her lover Tammuz. Her absence halts all fertility on earth until her return—symbolizing death, renewal, and the turning of seasons. She is at once celestial and chthonic, embodying the paradox that creation and destruction are twin flames of the same divine force.

Ishtar as a Queer Deity

Ishtar collapses every boundary: between male and female, sacred and profane, mortal and divine. Her temples honored gala and kurgarru—queer, trans, and intersex priests who embodied her power to blur and transcend gender. Ancient hymns describe her as one who “turns a man into a woman and a woman into a man,” sanctifying transition itself as holy. Depicted with wings, a lion, and sometimes even a beard, Ishtar personifies sovereignty through multiplicity. She blesses sex workers, warriors, and mystics alike—those who live beyond societal constraints.

The Myth of HermesHermes—known as Mercury to the Romans and Thoth in Egypt—was a god of magic, letters, medicine, and occult wisdom. He moved freely between worlds as a psychopomp, guiding souls between life and death. Hermes was also a trickster and inventor: credited with creating language, measurement, music, and alchemy. His staff, the caduceus, entwined by serpents, symbolizes balance and transformation.

Hermes as a Queer DeityHermes embodies queerness through duality and divine androgyny. In ancient cults, he was worshiped alongside Aphrodite as Hermaphroditus, a deity of wholeness and fluid gender expression. His myths include love stories with both gods and mortals—men and women alike—revealing a god who transcends the constraints of binary identity. As patron of travelers, messengers, and liminal souls, Hermes protects queer, trans, and intersex people who navigate boundaries and self-redefinition.

Hermes & TarotHermes’ presence threads through the tarot wherever curiosity, knowledge, and sacred mischief converge. Together, these archetypes capture Hermes’ essence as the bridge between beginnings and endings, words and silence, body and spirit.

The Myth of NarcissusIn the Greek tradition, Narcissus was the beautiful son of a river god and a nymph—desired by many but devoted to none. His mother was told he would live long—if he never knew himself, so was kept from mirrors and still waters. 

When the nymph Echo fell in love with him, he rejected her advances; humiliated and grief-stricken, she faded until only her voice remained. As punishment, the goddess Aphrodite caused Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection. Unable to embrace the image he adored, he wasted away by the poolside until his body dissolved into white and red blossoms—the first daffodils, also called narcissus.

Narcissus as a Queer DeityNarcissus’s story has long been flattened into a warning against vanity, but beneath that surface lies a complex myth about self-recognition, queerness, and consent. Rather than arrogance, his refusal to return Echo’s affection can be seen as a declaration of autonomy. Narcissus does not die from ego, but from being punished for self-awareness in a world that demanded conformity. Modern retellings through queer and asexual lenses reframe Narcissus as a symbol of self-sovereignty rather than self-obsession.

Narcissus & TarotNarcissus’s myth appears throughout tarot as a meditation on self-awareness, reflection, and liberation from imposed narratives. These cards remind us that introspection and self-knowledge are sacred:

• Page of Cups (Upright)- Emotional curiosity, tenderness

• The Hanged Man - Shifting perspective, surrender

• The Magician - Creative manifestation

The Myth of IsisIsis—“the One Who Is All”—is one of the most beloved and enduring figures of Egyptian mythology. She is the giver of life, the mother of the sun, and the goddess who restores balance to the universe. Myths tell that Isis gathered the dismembered pieces of her beloved Osiris, breathed life into him, and conceived Horus—the sun reborn. As goddess of magic, medicine, and divine law, she rules both creation and death, the seen and unseen.

Isis as a Queer DeityThough often remembered as the great mother, Isis’s power extends beyond maternal archetypes. She embodies self-sovereignty and gender transcendence—a goddess who affirms the sacredness of identity and transformation. One myth tells of Isis appearing to a pregnant woman named Telethusa, instructing her to raise her child Iphis as a boy despite being born a girl. When Iphis later fell in love with another woman (Ianthe), Isis transformed him into a man so the two could marry—an act of divine gender affirmation. For this, Isis is honored by many as a protector of trans and gender-expansive people, a goddess who sees the truth of one’s soul beyond physical form.

Welcome back to Everyday Tarot! Season 16 is devoted to queer deities, and today, we turn to Zeus—the lightning-bearing patriarch of Greek mythology.

The Myth of ZeusZeus, ruler of Olympus and god of thunder and sky, is a figure of immense authority and appetite. Known for his lightning bolts and numerous affairs, he represents the archetype of dominance and creation—often through chaos. Ancient texts trace his lineage to Dyaus Pitar, or “Father Heaven,” linking him to other sky gods such as Jupiter and Odin. Though revered as patriarch, Zeus inherited his power by overthrowing his father Cronus and absorbing earlier matriarchal traditions once ruled by Gaia and Rhea.

Zeus as a Queer DeityWhile often remembered for his authority and countless heterosexual liaisons, Zeus’s mythology also contains deeply queer undertones. Most notably his relationship with Ganymede, a mortal youth taken to Olympus as cupbearer to the gods, reveals ancient cultural dynamics of mentorship, eroticism, and power imbalance. Modern readers might view Zeus as bisexual or pansexual.

Zeus & TarotZeus’s energy appears in tarot as both ruler and storm-bringer. The archetype reminds us that authority is not static.

What we explore in this episode:

• The myth of Artemis

Daughter of Zeus and twin to Apollo, Artemis strides the forest as huntress and moon goddess. In Greek and Roman strands (Artemis/Diana), she’s keeper of wild creatures, midwifery, and thresholds. Her emblems—bow, hounds, and moon—speak to precision, instinct, and night vision. She embodies the freedom of the woods and the clarity of a steady arrow: act cleanly, aim truly, and disturb as little as possible.

Artemis as a Queer Deity

In many readings, “virgin” meant sovereign—unmarried, self-ruled—not sexless. Artemis rejects compulsory coupling and chooses devotion to women, the wild, and her nymph cohort. Modern lenses find her across spectra: lesbian/bi, ace/aro, gender-nonconforming warrior-scholar of the forest. Her queerness is autonomy in action: centering chosen kin, consent, wilderness ethics, and a life beyond domestic scripts.

Artemis & TarotArtemis’s energy runs through cards that honor intuition, discipline, and instinctual wisdom. Together, these cards remind us that Artemis teaches strength through stillness, clarity through intuition, and liberation through self-trust.

• The Hanged Man - Shifting perspectives, surrender, and liberation from old patterns
