She always trusted her husband.
Until he died.
Clara Solberg's world shatters when her husband and four-year-old daughter are in a car crash, killing Nick while Maisie is remarkably unharmed.
But when Maisie starts having nightmares, Clara becomes obsessed that Nick's death was far more than just an accident.
Who wanted Nick dead? And, more importantly, why? Clara will stop at nothing to find out the truth - even if it makes her question whether her entire marriage has been a lie....
Critic Reviews:
"A page-turning whodunit." (Ruth Ware, best-selling author of The Woman in Cabin 10)

Spoilers inside. I love Mary Kubica, but...
I feel terrible giving this book 2 stars- I love Mary Kubica and she's one of my favorite writers. I've read all of her books. But this was awful. Everything was too over-described, this wasn't even purple prose it bordered on violet/black to the point that some paragraphs were unreadable. Almost everything in Clara's point of view was repeated ten times at least. ALL of the suspense fell flat. I mean.... (spoilers ahead...) why did Maisie pee and scream every time she saw a black chevy?! What happened to Izzy? Why did one neighbor on the road where the accident happened say she saw a chevy (the gold bow) when the video showed no other cars on the road? Why did her father hate nick so much?
Clara herself was a disaster and beyond unlikeable. She was borderline nuts and a bad parent (leaving her NEWBORN in a hot car?! More than once! Can't make this up). Nick to me was slightly more readable, I liked seeing how he was going to get out of his current mess, but at the end, he still left his family with nothing- no money, no life insurance, etc. Horrible.
The Kat thing... well, laughable. Someone Nick dated at 18, in high school, when they were KIDS married someone else, had a kid and moved 2000 miles away. Then she shows up out of the blue, tries to get him to father her kid (pure manipulation if you ask me) then cries to his widow over and over about how much she LOVE LOVE LOVED him after seeing him 3x for 5 minutes each after a dozen years.
Connor. Yeah right. The gorgeous best friend, total player, leaps on Clara a week after the accident. Because baby weight is irresistible. She hadn't given birth 2 weeks prior. And why was he such a douche? Your best friend has money trouble and laid you off. Try being supportive and not a jerk for no reason.
All in all, too many red herrings that didn't pan out (Theo beat the crap out of nick in front of maisie and what?!? She never mentions it? Just "bad man" about the accident which had nothing to do with the accident?). I can't find it in my heart to give Mary Kubica one star so she gets 2
Not quite 5
Enjoyed this book as I read it in one sitting. There are several times where it seems the author was just rattling on about things that were very unimportant & I did skip over half the page in order to get back on track. Also seems to be an obsession with sweat in this book that I donât quite understand.
