  • PaniCast 25 - "SUGAR everybody!"
    October 31, 1994
    Evanston, IL
    Omni Orrington Hotel Ballroom

    Linus and Lucy Theme
    Space Wrangler >
    Guilded Splinters >
    Maggot Brain
    Coconut >
    Mr. Soul

It was a dark and stormy night in Illinois. No kidding.
Cold horizontal rain coming down in sheets. Reports of plane crashes. In the hotel bar on the big screen the Bears and Packers on Monday Night Football are playing in 'throw back' uniforms. A girl in a grass skirt and a coconut top floats by. Are we in some sort of weird time-warp?

If that seems strange, imagine showing up for a halloween show and buying tickets at the door for $12!
Northwestern's fall ball in a hotel ballroom featuring Widespread Panic was a truly memorable experience and the last small scale halloween the band ever played.

Turn this one up loud !

  • PaniCast 24 - October 25, 1996 Madison
    Barrymore Theatre, Madison, WI

On October 25, 1996 Lisa and I presented the first edition editor's copy of the Everyday Companion to the band and crew. The show itself was memorable and then to have the treat of getting books into the hands of those responsible for the music was a memory I will not soon forget.

  • PaniCast 23 House of Blues Orlando SPECIAL
I've been obsessively downloading and listening to as much of the recent Jimmy Herring Widespread as I can possibly get my hands on. The recent House of Blues run in Orlando looked like a series of smokers and from what I've been able to hear the setlists don't lie!

There were so many highlights that I found myself with more material than one Cast could contain - so it has been extended to an hour! The band is by no means playing perfectly, but they sure are taking chances and letting the music play the band.

    Highlights in this cast include:
    C. Brown with Jimmy Herring on Acoustic guitar
the Barstools is the first with Jimmy
    the Hatfield rap is freaky
and JB continues his antics during the Fishwater
Finally - what can I say about Little Wing?!!

  • PanicCast 17 - Widespread Panic in NOLA
    City of New Orleans Special
(aka the GREAT cover song review)

This is by no means a true 'best of' New Orleans - but enjoy some selections from the Crescent City.

July 28, 1994 House of Blues, New Orleans, LA
    I Walk on Guilded Splinters

    Novermber 22, 1993 Tipitina's, New Orleans, LA

    Junco Partner >
    Mardi Gras in New Orleans
    Lawyers, Guns and Money
    Red Hot Mama >
    Sharon
    Trouble
    Soul Kitchen

I found a great interview where JoJo talks about this version of Junco > Mardi Gras HERE

The 10/28/00 show fetaures some great Panic moments. JB's flub of Junco Partner leads to a spirited Mardi Gras jam; yet another example of how the band's philosophy of improvisation and allowing songs to be in the moment can create some unexpected magic. The bust outs of Lawyers Guns and Money, Trouble and Soul Kitchen almost overshadow the fine Red Hot Mama > Sharon. I find myself thinking of this show when I think of New Orleans - probably because of the Mardi Gras jam.

May the spirit of the music of New Orleans and, more importantly, the entire gulf coast live forever.

  • PaniCast #16 When in Doubt, Go Completely OUT!

    Edgewater
    Center Stage (with John Keane)
Tennessee Before Daylight (with John Keane)
    Smoke and Burn (Burned Faceless)

    Go Completely Out!

    The scoop on this CAST:
What a huge time I had in Chicago! Amazing venue, great company and beautiful weather.
I had the good fortune of being able to take the REST of my family (Mom, Dad and sister Katie) to the Friday night show. All four members of my immediate family seeing a show with me in a single summer - now that is an acccomplishment!

I think everyone had a wonderful time and it was a great way to start a solid weekend of music and friends. It was a pleasure to see each parent leave the theatre with a smile on their face! Thanks mom and dad for everything and for putting up with my antics fo the past 37 years!

The Barstools we feature this week is freaking crazy -
The PA was acting up to start the second set and it kicked back in just in time for the band to turn the corner into Barstools. JB must've been feeding off the nervous energy created during those tense minutes to start the set and gave the crowd a treat. The Thank You Falletten Me Be Mice Elf rap is great but then his 'Baby only knows...' rap is one for the books:

'Just watch that baby. Basically the first thought he got is like
    'WHOA! WHOA! WHAT THE FUCK!!
And how long we gotta do it? Did I get it right, like 80 years?'
And that baby said 'OOOOOH! OOOOOH'

Then we feature several selections from the Outformation show that night just across the river at the House of Blues. A portion of this features John Keane on pedal steel. This show also had a palpable energy - I heard more than one person say they saw two of their top shows in one night!

Check out Outformation's summer/fall dates here - they are opening for Widespread in Charrlottesville!

It was so great to see so many old friends again. Thanks to Dennis and Val and Tom and Ashley for letting me tag along on the pilgrimmage to Wishbone on Sunday. Thanks to Leigh and Jen for letting me invade your space in the 6th row on Saturday night. Thanks to Chris for the BBQ on Saturday and for showing me the late night on Sunday night.

And it was great to meet so many new friends as well -
to the nine year old who saw his first concert on Sunday night - I hope you had a great time and I wish you all the best in your journeys through life and music!

    Peace, Ted
