Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and let’s dig into what you can expect from this micro-podcast.
But first, I’m not a social scientist. I’m actually a recovering lawyer turned happiness consultant. So what I’ll share with you throughout this micr- podcast are my experiences in organizations and with friends and family, my method of reducing overwhelm and finding clarity, and the extensive research done by brilliant minds in this niche. It’s your perfectly curated daily dose of happiness.
What I’m most excited about is that it is scientifically proven that you can increase your Happiness. Laurie Santos, from Yale University and so many others talk about this and how our minds get in the way of our happiness.
Crazy, right? I’m trying to tell my brain I want to be happier - and yet - it’s not a lightswitch and I don’t feel it. Come to find out, our brains are not built for seeking out pleasure, they are designed to keep us alive, not to keep us happy. In order to protect us, our brains are programmed to be looking for danger - is the lion about to attack us. That’s how we started, in the human species - thousands of years ago, this was a real threat. And apparently being happy all the time without a care in the world got you killed. So those genes did not pass down over the thousands of years.
When I learned this scientific fast, I almost fell over. I’m pretty sure I seek out pleasure. But here we are. Tomorrow, you get your first tip on how to increase your happiness.
